By Simon Cocking review of Digital Transformation Know How, by Stijn Viaene available from Amazon here.
In recent years, digital development has accelerated and digital turbulence is the new normal. So, it’s time for a synthesis, time to bring stability to that turbulence: What have we learned? What do we know? What should we no longer have doubts about? Whether you’re a CEO or a dedicated worker, you have an important role to play in your organisation’s digital transformation. But it’s hard when you don’t have a common frame of reference or common language. What’s the big picture? How do things align? How can you contribute?
This book offers you a practical perspective on six critical elements of successful digital transformation design
This is a timely book. The covid-19 virus has pushed the world into a digital first, digital facing transition, far quicker than many had wanted it to happen. There was often little to no good reason for not allowing staff to work remotely, and be more digital in their working habits. For many companies it was more about middle managers being able to monitor how much time employees spent in the office, often exacerbating presenteeism for no particularly good reason beyond simply that they could do this.
Viaene’s book, or rather series of essays, comes as a breath of fresh air, delivered and written prior to the current world of lockdowns and digital first changes to our working habits. It however is extremely timely, relevant and useful. For companies looking to navigate a path forwards from here they could do worse than to pick this book up and use it as a guide for what good looks like going forwards.
This is not a long book, coming in at 140 pages, but it’s brevity does not count unduly against it. The language is clear and concise, and, as we have been advocating for a long time, there is great value in assessing people’s work by it’s quality and timeliness. Neither of which requires you to be the same room, office, or even country. Covid-19 really could be the spur to a faster than hoped for digital transformation around the world. Here’s hoping, and Viaene’s book may just help that process along too.
