Technology has completely redefined the way we go about everyday tasks, business and leisure. It undeniably brings opportunities for our modern lives our grandparents couldn’t wish for in their wildest dreams, but this privilege doesn’t come free and we pay in ways that might not be very evident at first glance. While overall technology is obviously worth it, there are probably as many drawbacks to technology as there are benefits. This article will cover only a few most important ones.
Digital technology allows users to record and store a lot of data. It makes life more organised and easier because we can access our data quickly and don’t need rooms full of files to keep everything on record. The downside of this, however, is that all the data is stored in one place, so if anyone breaches our security systems they can gain access to most of our files.
In the hands of the wrong crowd, this could bring about devastating consequences like a company going out of business. In fact, it’s reported that one in eight businesses close down because of security breaches. Luckily, some of the most common security measures such as using security software, updating programs and systems regularly, or use of intrusion detectors should protect your business from most cyber attacks. There are also companies or individuals that can be hired to help keep your business secure.
Cyberbullying is often on the flip side of the convenience of social media apps and can be devastating to a person’s mental well-being. But not all the issues that come with technology can be as easy to identify as that and many take on a more inconspicuous role. For example, where do we draw a line between seeking validation on social media apps and dependence that turns into an addiction?
Another issue that might be difficult to spot comes from the availability ‘addictive’ games like candy crush or gambling games available on mobile casinos. Because we use our phones so much during the day it isn’t obvious when a person begins to display addictive behaviours. The upside of this, though, is that the gambling industry undergoes very stringent checks to make sure that the entertainment it provides to its customers is safe and fair. The most well-established way to regulate the industry is by issuing gambling licenses by regulatory bodies like the UK Gambling Association or the Malta Gambling Association.
Job insecurity is a growing fear mainly due to the development of Artificial Intelligence. People worry that AI will take over their jobs the way people on the threshold of the industrial revolution worried about machines doing the same to them. However, despite these fears, we’re told by economists and experts in the field, that the introduction of AI to the job market will continue to happen step by step.
New technology is supposed to be an assistive system and free employees from the most menial or time-consuming tasks in their jobs and allow them to focus on more advanced assignments. Plenty of businesses already use AI for data analysis, sales and business forecasting, security surveillance. Most jobs nowadays also promote the use of smart personal assistants, like for example as Siri, Cortana or Google Now.
