INVITATION to a Coffee Morning at the National Maternity Hospital*, Holles St, to have your voice heard

WHEN: Monday, February 10th, 11am-12.30pm

Did you have a pregnancy affected by pre-eclampsia [PET]?

Or did it affect your partner/sister/daughter/mother?

WHY: We are a group of doctors and scientists working on an exciting new breakthrough that will use AI to help predict PET severity and improve outcomes for mother and baby. Our project AI PREMie has been chosen to compete in Science Foundation Ireland’s AI For Societal Good Challenge – a sort of Dragon’s Den for scientists with an ultimate prize of €2m in research funding.

While we are good at research in the lab, we do not know what it was like for you or your partner or loved one to develop PET. In order to help people we need to understand what it was like to develop PET, how it affected your pregnancy, your life, your baby – and what it is like to look after someone who has PET.

WHAT: PET is the world’s deadliest pregnancy complication affecting almost one in ten pregnant Irish women. Characterised by high blood pressure, globally it accounts for 50,0000 maternal deaths a year and 500,000 infant deaths a year – at a conservative estimate. At present the only “cure” for PET is preterm delivery of the baby – which can have devastating lifelong consequences.

WHO: We are Prof. Patricia Maguire, Director, UCD Institute for Discovery, School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Science, Prof Mary Higgins, Consultant Obstetrician, National Maternity Hospital and Prof Fionnuala Ni Ainle, Consultant Haematologist, Rotunda Hospital.

REGISTER: To register (just so we know how much coffee to order!) please contact [email protected] or [email protected].
