Interview with Dave Troy, entrepreneur, disinformation researcher, and speaker. Organizer, @TEDxMidAtlanticCEO 410 Labs, maker of @mailstromapp and @chuckemail who will be speaking at Beyond IoT 2020 will take place on the 20th and 21st of January in the Cork Institute of Technology. See more about the event here.
Short pitch for what you are doing now?
In addition to our company’s email management tools (Mailstrom for web, and Chuck for iOS), I’m interested in how we re-frame the discussion of disinformation to focus on healthy information environments, and how we all have a responsibility and role to play in designing a future compatible with democracy.
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
I feel like we made some progress in understanding healthy information environments, but there is a long way to go. The public still does not have a good idea of how disinformation and misinformation work to break down democratic societies.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m curating two conferences on securing our information environments this year, and working with some amazing experts. I want to make democracies more resilient.
What will you be talking about at this event?
I’ll be offering some new ways to think about how we should be designing our democracies to be more resilient, and how information, IOT, social networks and the internet all play key roles in creating healthy information environments.
What inspired you to attend it?
I had the pleasure of speaking last year, and I’m pleased to share some new ideas that have come up since then!
Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
I’m very much following disinformation as a key topic. So I follow the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensics Lab (@DFRLab), EU vs. Disinfo (https://euvsdisinfo.eu), Credibility Coalition (https://credibilitycoalition.org), Amanda Rivkin @ NATO STRATCOM (@amandarivkin), QAnon Anonymous Podcast, and a variety of other channels.
How can people find out more about what you are working on?
Follow me on Facebook and Twitter!
I'm proud to have played a (small) role in helping to acquire Washington's original manuscript for display in the Maryland State House. It was purchased with state + private donor funds in 2008; I was the buyer of record, on behalf of Friends of the Maryland State Archives. https://t.co/eE2gx62tkD

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
I’m happy to be back in Cork and look forward to talking with everyone individually as well!
