“The selected entrepreneurs will go through a three-stage process to leave Menorca robuster”, recalled Marcos Martin, CEO and co-founder of Decelera
Menorca, January 31, 2019. Decelera has opened the Second phase to select the top 25 ‘tech-sustainable’ startups that will participate in the 5th edition of the program to breathe, focus and grow in Menorca with business leaders like Lucas Carné (Privalia), Max Kelly (Techstars London), Rupert Barksfield (Pynko) and Martin Varsavsky (Prelude and Overture), among others.
More than 250 startups have applied already from 62 countries. Of these, 62% came from Europe; 17% from Asia; 12% from Africa; 4,6% from North America; 3,5% from South America; and 1%, from Oceania. Entrepreneurs have still time to apply as the registration period is extended until March 4.
The 25 best tech-sustainable projects and their founders will become the ‘startup heroes 2019’ and will spend two weeks in the Decelera Campus of Menorca. “The entrepreneurs will go through a three-stage process to leave the island robuster: First, decelerate to reconnect with their creativity and strengths; Second, detect problems and envision solutions along with mentors and peers; and Third, meet with potential investors in a relaxed atmosphere as they go also through a deceleration process”, recalled Marcos Martín, co-founder and CEO of Decelera.
A tech-sustainable majority
Most of the startups that has applied are all aligned with the 17 United Nations’ SDGs; 90% assure to work for a better world, making cities and communities sustainable, contributing to the good health and well-being of the population, protecting the planet in different fields, fighting against poverty or making this world more equal through education.
Last year, sustainable projects like Jiro-ve participated to make renewable energy in Madagascar and end the use of oil lamps. BeOn Energy decelerated to boost its solar kit to generate renewable energy at home.
In the four previous editions, 90 startups have gone through the deceleration program. Of these, more than 40% raised funds. Among them were PLD Space (2016), which completed its Series A of €17 M last June; the mobile platform for retailers Mercaux (2017), which closed a $4.5M Serie A round last November; or the Velvet (2018) blockchain solution. In the last four editions, They raised over €80M.
The program –that continues for 18 months after the two deceleration weeks – has a unique methodology that reduces investment risk for investors and startups. The experience in Decelera campus enables an effective Human Due Diligence conducted by the team.
About Decelera
Decelera is a growing company focused on generating differential value through a deceleration methodology for startups, corporations and investors. It helps entrepreneurs to find the best performing model in order to grow in a sustainable way and contribute towards a better future.
The 18-month program starts with a parenthesis of one or two weeks of disconnection in a natural environment of singular beauty (Menorca and México). In the first few days, the ‘startup heroes’ decelerate and identify the keys on how to generate value through teamwork, the importance of sustainability (which is inherent in deceleration) and the power of the network and community.
In the second phase, they focus on their projects and teams through relaxed one-to-one meetings with the experience makers, as well as doing activities off-campus. During the last days, the entrepreneurs have individual meetings with potential investors to raise funds.
