New research from ClearStory International has revealed data protection as the most talked about topic in Ireland over the past 12 months.
The findings come on the back of a turbulent year of uncertainty due to the hard-hitting impact of COVID-19 on consumer lifestyles.
Why Data protection is Ireland’s most spoken about issue
The COVID-19 Tech Trend Report was compiled to help businesses, industry stakeholders, journalists, and others gain insight into the historic speed and scale of interest that catapulted previously obscured tech trends into public prominence.
Some of the most spoken about tech trends in Ireland by Irish media over the past year include:
- Data protection (9,130 media articles)
- Gaming (3,410 media articles)
- Artificial intelligence (3,110 media articles)
- E-commerce (2,250 media articles)
- Cybersecurity (2,610 media articles)
With regard to data protection, the increase in share of voice has seen a total of 9,130 articles published across various Irish media outlets.
The spike in interest has been driven by a surge in concerns from consumers regarding data processes and storage, particularly around personal health data and regulations.
In addition to this, Ireland’s COVID Tracker app which experienced over one million downloads within just 36 hours of launching, has driven overall interest in data and data protection alongside a growing interest in GDPR.
Security around consumer health remains a significant area of interest and, according to the latest figures from the Data Protection Commission, there was a 71% increase in data security breaches in Ireland last year.
With 104 Irish people having their Pandemic Unemployment Payment stopped due to travelling overseas and controversy over Facebook data breaches, data protection has proved a key area of interest for 2019/202.
In addition to data protection, there was a sizable increase in interest in virtual events which experienced a 6,550% surge in articles, alongside remote working, which spiked at a 453% increase.
Speaking about the ClearStory International Tech Trends Report for Ireland 2020, CEO and Founder of ClearStory International, James McCann said:
“This latest report demonstrates a sizable shift in interest towards data privacy, as COVID-19 powers a significant surge in innovation across the tech sector. With the launch of the COVID Tracker app and various concerns by consumers surrounding GDPR and social media sites, this increase shows a spike in awareness of data protection and how data is being consumed. I have no doubt lockdown has resulted in a sharp incline in interest in gaming and artificial intelligence as consumers desperately search for ways to cope through Ireland’s phased restriction lifting approach.”
The study was carried out from the 1st of June to the 20th of May.
