Review of Dancing with Bees, A Journey Back to Nature, by Brigit Strawbridge Howard. Published by Chelsea Green available here.
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2020 WAINWRIGHT PRIZE
A naturalist’s passionate dive into the lives of bees (of all stripes)—and the natural world in her own backyard
Brigit Strawbridge Howard was shocked the day she realised she knew more about the French Revolution than she did about her native trees. And birds. And wildflowers. And bees. The thought stopped her—quite literally—in her tracks. But that day was also the start of a journey, one filled with silver birches and hairy-footed flower bees, skylarks, and rosebay willow herb, and the joy that comes with deepening one’s relationship with place. Dancing with Bees is Strawbridge Howard’s charming and eloquent account of a return to noticing, to rediscovering a perspective on the world that had somehow been lost to her for decades and to reconnecting with the natural world.
With special care and attention to the plight of pollinators, including honeybees, bumblebees, and solitary bees, and what we can do to help them, Strawbridge Howard shares fascinating details of the lives of flora and fauna that have filled her days with ever-increasing wonder and delight.
Dancing with Bees A Journey Back to Nature, reviewed
As you may have noticed we have run a few bee-related pieces recently, because, well, you know, if we don’t have any of them left, then our plants and crops may no longer be pollinated any more, and that would be, well, kinda terminal for us a species. Brigit Strawbridge Howard takes us on her own personal journey, one that is both engaging, interesting, and also full of many wider insights that we can all learn from.
I have only 79 signed hardback copies of my book left! Paperbacks will be reprinted, but once the hardbacks are gone, they're gone.
Both are available direct from my blog site, here: https://t.co/hCOjwXtAOJ
I can't compete with A****n on price, but I do pay my taxes!

Bees cover quite a wide variety of types, from honey bees to bumble bees and solitary bees, some of which are millimeters long. We certainly didn’t realise there are cuckoo like bees who sneak into hives, kill the queen and get the workers to raise their own broods. In a similar fashion Strawbridge Howard covers a wide range of bee related episodes and insights which keeps it fresh and informative as each chapter covers a new area. With all important issues, it is more effective to get people to understand and care about something, rather than simply telling them that they ‘should’ be concerned about it. This book successfully achieves this blend and would make a great stocking filler.
