When a company suffers a data security breach, it’s not just the data itself that’s at stake but the company’s reputation, and brand, as well. The incidence and cost of a security breach continue to rise—the cost of a breach for 100 lost records is estimated to be $254 per record. And in 25% of cases it takes days or longer to discover the breach, with a third party often being the ones to bring it to the company’s notice.
Yet a strategy for preventing and dealing with cybercrime is something that all companies can implement, regardless of resources. Strategies vary from good business practice like being vigilant and making your people your first line of defence, to more technology related actions such as up to date anti-virus software and 2-factor password authentication.
It may come as a surprise that Ireland has a substantial resource of companies, colleges and research centres specialising in cybersecurity solutions and research. The sector in Ireland generates revenues of €1.5bn with 6,000 jobs, and is growing at about 20% per year. We currently have 41 multinationals and over 140 Irish companies in the sector between established and award-winning start-up companies.
A key player in this sector is InfoSecurity Ireland (ISI)—an association of information security software companies with a membership of some 130 companies and colleges. Our objective is to present Ireland as a centre of excellence in cybersecurity, with consequent benefit for revenues and jobs in those companies.
On Wednesday 13th April, ISI will present a seminar on Cybersecurity for SMEs at the Davenport Hotel, Dublin 2. The seminar is aimed at professional services companies, and the wider services sector, for whom protection of their data and IT systems is a constant challenge. The event will include an exhibition of security software solutions from ISI member companies. The keynote address will be delivered by Det Sgt Michael Gubbins, head of the Computer Crime Investigations Unit at An Garda Siochana.
