Rachel and Amir are second year journalism students from Coventry University, and are interning with Irish Tech News throughout May. They are interning to gain some experience working for an established news organisation and develop the skills they have learnt so far at university.
The internship marks the start of a partnership between Coventry University and Irish Tech News. “It is great to have partnered with Irish Tech News, who are such a respected brand and who are able to offer so many opportunities to our journalism students. I look forward to establishing a strong and successful working relationship with them”, said Lisa Perry, Lecturer in Journalism at Coventry University.

Rachel and Amir have both gained confidence throughout their studies at Coventry University. They have become proficient at writing articles for print/online and recording and editing multimedia packages.
Amir is looking forward to applying the skills he has learnt at university to the internship and hopes to expand some of his techniques over the next month. Amir’s main interests are sports, entertainment and cryptocurrency. Amir is fascinated in blockchain and is excited to see how it grows in the next few years; he is currently looking into Cardano. He believes that Cardano could achieve trust in global systems through the blockchain technology.
Rachel is keen to develop interview techniques and audio editing skills, she really enjoys producing multimedia pieces on hard-hitting topics such as animal rights. Rachel’s main interests are politics, conflict, animal rights and the environment; she enjoys looking into how technology can impact the dynamic between humans and animals in developing countries and how it can help or hinder people living in war zones.
“I have taught Rachel and Amir for the majority of their time at Coventry University and it has been a pleasure,” Lisa Perry said, “They are committed, dedicated students who always try their best in class and in their assessments.
“I taught them a practical module this year about how to break into journalism and they have both shown great resilience and determination in using those skills to gain valuable work experience”.
The partnership between Coventry University and Irish Tech News will hopefully mean that future journalism students can have the opportunity to work for an esteemed news organisation and work with experts in various fields. For student journalists, this is also an engaging way to build up contacts and have their work seen by a larger audience than what they might get on their own personal blogs and podcasts.
