Cork Podcast Festival

When and where is it on?

The festival is on from the 11th to the 13th of October in multiple venues including Cork Opera House, Crawford Art Gallery, The River Lee, bookshops, record shops, and other nooks and crannies across Cork city.

How many years has it been going?

This is its first year!

What was the inspiration to start it?

We felt that the time was right in Cork. We’re big podcast consumers ourselves. We’ve noticed over the last few years how podcasts have been growing in popularity more so than any other type of media. Listeners are hungry to hear about other people’s ideas and opinions, especially when they are genuine and well thought out. There is a podcast out there for every single person. Some love true crime others like self-help or sports. The sheer number of Irish podcasts alone indicates how the trend is going, some say podcasts are the new rock and roll.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

Well, there is a lot to look forward to but at this time we have only announced the Audible hit ‘West Cork’ which will be a live show in Cork Opera House on Saturday 12th October. But on top of this people can expect podcasts on health and fitness, sustainability, comedy, climate change, unsolved mysteries, horror and music. Plus a few curve balls thrown in for good measure. Most of them will be recorded in front of a live audience and aired later and some will be more of a stage show or panel discussion type of thing.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

There will be opportunities to see and hear your favourite podcasts in a live setting. We plan to livestream as many of the shows as possible and we’ll also have festival tickets where people can attend multiple shows on the one ticket. Of course there’s Cork itself and the beautiful venues where these shows will be on. We’re expecting a bit of a buzz around the city for the weekend and the usual welcoming atmosphere our events are known for.

Who will be speaking?

So many different podcasters, men, women, transvestites, wrestlers, a few animals (may not be speaking) and some big names. Unfortunately that’s all I can say for now as we have yet to announce most of the line up!

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

Do your research on the smaller podcasts. The ones we have picked for the festival are so good, but it’s quite possible that not everyone would be familiar with all of them. The beauty about podcasts though is that in a few taps on your phone you can be plugged in and listening to your new favourite show in seconds. Also get a festival ticket and go to a few shows over the weekend even if you don’t know them, they’ll all be good.

How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?

Tickets will be available from www.corkpodcastfestival.ie, www.uticket.ie and all the venues. Our website is currently under construction and will be live in the next couple of weeks.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

The festival is a first for Cork but we think it is going to become a big event in the annual Cork calendar and we’re excited to see where it will take us all.
