‘DCs for Bees – Orchards in the Community’, a webinar to aid bee populations will be launching June 16th from 3-4 pm GMT.
This event is held by Host In Ireland, it will be a live webinar featuring talks and ranging different topics surrounding biodiversity and sustaining our pollinator populations.
What can this do for bees?
They will discuss topics like ‘The What, Why, How of National Pollinator Plan 2021 – 2026’, ‘Why Orchards help halt the decline of pollinators in Ireland’, ‘How Communities, Individual, Business and Industry are getting resolved’ and finally ‘Where you can start’.
Featured at the webinar will be Michelle Wallace, from Host In Ireland, Peter Dowdall, The Irish Gardener, RTE, Katie Mills, Schneider Electric, and Dr. Una Fitzpatrick, All Ireland Pollinator Plan.
Part of the webinar and DCs for Bees initiative is the highlighting of the necessity of orchards. Orchards play a key role in providing an early food source for struggling bees coming out of the wintertime.
To help protect the bees and increase overall pollination, they hope to plant an excess of 1,000 mixed fruit orchards all over Ireland during the dormant season. The orchards will be planted by partners in Host In Ireland and other interested companies in collaboration groups and organisations in Ireland from November 2021 to February 2022.
Orchards are classified as ‘Priority Habitats’, making ideal homes for thousands of species of flora and fauna like lichens, fungi, and beetles. Fruit trees blossom early in the year, providing an important food source for your pollinators at the end of winter.
The space between trees lets more sunlight in, which the like of butterflies and bees who need warmth to power their flight muscles. They also hope this will promote further awareness, organisation, and community purpose-based activity.
