When/where is the conference held?

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) will hold the annual ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2019) from September 11-13 in London, UK. The programs this year will be held at the QEII Centre.

How many years has it been going? Why does this conference matter?

Held annually since 2001, Ubicomp brings together top researchers and practitioners who are interested in the technical and applied aspects of ubiquitous computing. As a premier venue for presenting research in the design, development, deployment, evaluation and understanding of ubiquitous computing systems, Ubicomp bridges the gaps between the digital and physical worlds.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

• Researchers and practitioners will present the latest innovations across a broad range of technologies, ranging from mobile phones to sensors and the Internet of Things to wearable computers and futuristic new technologies.
• Attendees will also hear about the latest research on the human experiences and social impacts facilitated by these pervasive technologies.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

UbiComp is the most comprehensive venue for research on all aspects of ubiquitous computing, providing attendees with the opportunity to connect with international colleagues and to learn about the latest innovations that are shaping this emerging field.

This year’s conference is divided into 36-distinct sessions, with session titles including everything from Smartphones & Apps to Mobile Health, to Vehicle and Data Management. The workshops and tutorials offered at UbiComp reflect the wide range of research that is being conducted in the growing field of ubiquitous computing.

Who will be speaking?

Among the many speakers and presenters are Marta Kwiatkowska of the University of Oxford, and Lama Nachman of Intel, both of whom are providing keynotes. Kwiatkowska will discuss the machine learning modelling and personalization techniques in a variety of applications – including medical devices, biometric security, cobotics, and self-driving cars — that best guarantee safety and reliability. Nachman, director at Intel’s Anticipatory Computing Lab, will discuss her research in creating contextually aware experiences that understand users through sensing and sense-making and subsequently act on that context to help with many aspects of their lives.

To register, please visit the UbiComp / ISWC 2019 conference registration page. Regular registration rates are available until September 8 and on-site registration rates are available between September 9-13.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

We are hosting a drinks and networking reception at the world-famous Hintze Hall at the Natural History Museum. The reception will be on Tuesday evening – the first drink is free to all attendees, and a cash bar will also be available.
