Get ready for a shock from Euro 2020, with a Super Computer’s prediction that the Czech Republic is to win based on analysis of all teams and their results over the last 20 years.
This prediction would see the Czech Republic become the champions after beating Denmark in a 3-2 final. Football experts at Sportradar, a leading sports data provider have played out the whole of the tournament using their Simulated Reality solution using Artificial Intelligence, coupling data on these teams and matches with how they would perform in a simulated setting.
Czech Republic’s Simulated Journey
Unfortunately for pre-tournament favorites, England will see another semi-final defeat as they crashed out to the beaten finalists. Despite the Euro’s unpredictability, the Czech Republic’s forecast success would align with Greece’s sensational victory in 2004.
This is as well taking into consideration England’s defeats by the Republic of Ireland in 1988, Sweden in 1992, and Iceland in 2016. However, the Czech Republic and Denmark, the predicted finalists, according to Sportsradar, have “firm” when it comes to Euro shocks themselves.
Denmark did not even qualify in 1992 and was only drafted two weeks before the competition after Yugoslavia was forced to withdraw. At the end of their journey, they managed to beat Germany 2-0.
In 1996, Czech Republic was beaten by Germany and managed to turn things around and beat Italy 2-1 in their next game. They made it to the final however their luck ran out when they faced Germany a second time and lost, with it being their third time bringing home the Euro crown.
England, under Gareth Southgate, is predicted to continue to perform before reaching the last four and losing to Denmark 3-2. The Three Lions are predicted to remain “perennial bridesmaids” having not won a major international tournament since the 1966 World cup, held in England.
In the Euro 2020 group stages, England qualified for the knockouts after two wins and a loss. They beat Croatia 5-2 in their first game and grappled with Scotland with a win of 1-0 before finally going on to down eventual winners, the Czech Republic, 2-1.
In Round 16, England progressed by beating France 3-1, then beating Poland 3-2 in the quarter-finals before losing to Denmark in the semi-finals. Despite the Czech Republic losing to England at the group stage, they also beat Spain and Germany in the knockout stages to set up a semi-final against Portugal, which the Czech won a tight 1-0.
Werner Becher, Sportradar’s regional chief executive officer for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, said, “After such a long delay there’s a real sense of excitement about this tournament amongst fans. We’ve tapped into the breadth of our technical capabilities to simulate the tournament, processing millions of data points from the last 20 years in order to identify the winning team.” He also said, “Football is unpredictable, it’s one of the things we love most about the game, but few fans would have put Czech Republic and Denmark in the final.”
Their Simulated Reality is completely driven by AI and machine learning. This advanced tech uses Sportsradar’s historic databases to create game situations, outcomes, and gameplays.
The creators of this artificial intelligence algorithm said, “Simulated Reality football matches reflect team form and normal match conditions, using more than a decade’s worth of historic and statistical data to produce an immeasurable number of data points.”
“We have created a product that truly reflects the fan experience when watching and betting on a real game. It is completely new and unique to the industry.”
They also said, “Simulated Reality gives us the opportunity to model how real games would take place as they would happen in real stadiums. It’s all so fan-friendly.”
