Caselden Consulting Limited will be carrying out their monthly #CChats on Friday 31 July from 15:30-17:30. The topic of discussion for this months edition will be a panel discussion about racism in Ireland.
I spoke with Jeff Caseldon, co-founder of the company, about the seminar and the insights it wants to promote.
Firstly we discussed the inspiration for the event and how it came into fruition.
“We launched #CChats in March as an online Twitter conversation, but this month we’ve taken things in a slightly different direction and will be sharing a panel discussion that we held on Racism and Exclusionism in Ireland. #CChats began as a way to engage with people around the challenges we all faced as leaders and humans in the workplace after COVID-19 hit, specifically around the adaptability and resilience required for us all to adjust to this new normal”.
Jeff spoke of how recent world happenings, such as the tragic death of George Floyd in the U.S, provoked the company into wanting to discuss issues such as racism which permeate through all aspects of society:
“But sadly, this isn’t only an American problem. This prompted us to have an open conversation about the presence of racism and exclusionism in Irish society, to explore the realities of those who experience it, and to understand what practical steps we can take to open up deeper discussions on how we create an inclusive society rather than shutting down dialogue. We felt any discussion on resilience today would be hollow without acknowledging the utter resilience it takes for people who experience discrimination on a daily basis for aspects they can’t control about themselves, which many of us may never see or appreciate”.
In terms of the event itself, Jeff mentioned what attendees can expect, as well as the opportunities present for those that contribute.
“An open and frank discussion about what it’s like to be Black, mixed-race, a woman, or anyone else who mightn’t fit perceived notions of “Irishness” in Ireland. Our panel brings their authentic, lived experience to share with us all and shine a light on the reality of living in Ireland. This is an opportunity to learn and educate yourself about a reality you may have never experienced, and the chance to ask questions of people who want to support others in better understanding the dynamics of racial, social, political, or economic exclusion and the negative impacts this has upon us all”.
He moved on to discuss the different panelists who will contribute to the discussion, each person representing an interesting cross-section of diversity in Ireland:
“Deborah Somorin is a qualified chartered accountant, 2020 Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and founder of Empower The Family. Saleena Shaw is an expert in Humanitarian and Commercial Law and Gender Perspectives on Sexual Exploitation & Abuse Violations of UN Peacekeeping Forces, and an immigrant from the US. Tavengwa Tavengwa is an Associate Partner in a major accounting firm and immigrant from Zimbabwe. Waheed El Miladi – mixed-race Irishman who works as a Senior Product Engineer with a major Dublin tech startup. And lastly, Hugh Duggan is a white father of two wonderful Black boys and an HR professional with a background in Sociology”.
In terms of attendees getting the most out of their experience, Jeff was adamant that participants should have an open mind, and be ready to accept a lot of different experiences.
“Show up with an open mind, any questions you’d care to ask, and any learning you’d like to share with others. We really feel the value of events like these comes from the collective experience we all bring to the table, not just from what we have to say ourselves”.
There’s no need to book tickets and the event is totally free. The full panel discussion video will be released on our YouTube channel, and you can head to @CaseldenConsult on Twitter to join in the conversation and follow the #CChats hashtag!
As we concluded Jeff stated a famous quote, that highlights how racism will never be changed until it is fully challenged.
“James Baldwin said it very well: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced”.
