Calibra, the Facebook subsidiary developing a digital wallet for Libra, a new global payment system powered by blockchain technology, plans to hire up to 50 people in various roles by the end of the year. The pace of hiring at Calibra will depend on the evolving regulatory and licensing environment. In addition to Calibra, Facebook is continuing to hire in Ireland with hundreds of roles available across teams including safety and security, legal, finance and engineering – production engineering, networking, enterprise engineering and AR/VR.

Commenting on the recruitment drive, Laura Morgan Walsh, Head of Operations for Calibra said, “During this time of global uncertainty, we’re continuing to invest in our team located in Dublin. We’re actively hiring experts in fraud, compliance, workforce management, and customer care to expand our operations team supporting the Calibra Wallet. We believe financial inclusion is a problem that can be solved and we are looking for more dedicated professionals to join us. We’re still early in our journey and building the team now with a long-term view towards future projects.”

Calibra in Ireland is focused on growing its operations with experts in compliance, fraud and customer care. Roles in the compliance team will focus on protecting the integrity of the Calibra Wallet by working with external regulators and providing the highest standards of regulatory compliance. The team in Ireland will also be part of building and maintaining the fraud protection programme in Calibra.

This will involve improving fraud protection policies and procedures and working with global teams to build new tools and products to protect against vulnerabilities. Fraud specialists will be responsible for identifying and reviewing suspicious activity and determining the authenticity of accounts and transactions. Operations in Ireland will include customer service roles which will engage with customers on social media to manage customer complaints efficiently.

Established in Ireland in 2009 with a team of just 30 employees, Facebook in Ireland has grown to over 5,000 people and multiple locations with the International HQ campus in Dublin, AR/VR office in Cork and the Data Centre in Clonee, Meath. Phase two of the company’s Ballsbridge Campus, which will have the capacity to hold up to 7,000 employees, is due to be complete later this year, depending on the evolving COVID-19 situation.

Head of Facebook Ireland, Gareth Lambe commented, “Our mission to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together has never felt so important. As COVID-19 continues to affect the entire world, our products are helping people to stay in touch with family and friends and help not only their close communities but frontline health workers, emergency service personnel and complete strangers through these challenging times.

“Ireland is critically important to Facebook and plays a central role in our global operations. We have around 60 teams including engineers, safety and security experts, policy experts, marketing and sales people with a number of global and regional teams run from Ireland. For example, the infrastructure engineering team, based in Dublin and Meath, oversees infrastructure operations across Europe, Middle East and Africa ensuring our data centres and networks continue to operate, which is crucial at this time.

“Like all businesses, we’re focusing our hiring efforts on the right opportunities given the ongoing dynamic nature of our business. We remain committed to making critical hires across the business and we’re ensuring candidates and interviewers are safe, informed and connected as we continue to hire.”
