Business Showcase : Wia

By @SimonCocking

Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

At Wia, we provide developers and businesses with a cloud platform for building innovative Internet of Things applications. We help companies get rid of the need to build their own messy cloud infrastructure for their hardware products by providing all the software and APIs needed to build any sensor or location tracking solution.

How are you different?

Developers in over 65 countries have turned months into minutes and 100,000’s of lines of code to just a few simple commands, removing the biggest barriers to entry for a hardware company – time and money.

Why will the company/product do well?

We have a strong team with vast experience in building product and services. Our partner network sees us collaborating with some of the biggest names in software and connectivity including Sigfox, Twilio, PubNub and Slack.

Where are you based?

Dublin, Ireland

When was the company launched?

Early 2016

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Winner of IIA Best Startup – One to watch 2017
Winner of NDRC Investor Day Summer 2016
ESB Spark of Genius Finalist (top 3) 2016

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

Small to medium businesses who are trying to build an IoT product but don’t have an expertise in cloud or software development. We also want makers to come and use our platform for their home projects. We’ve got our own version of IFTTT that’s specifically built or the Internet of Things.

Tell us about your team?

Our team has a wealth of experience having built products and services for BBC, Net-a-Porter, IBM, HP, SAP and many more.

What are you long term plans for your product/company?

We want to have over 1 billion devices connected to the platform by 2020.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

I’m obsessed with my Bose noise-cancelling headphones and Kindle Paperwhite. I take both everywhere with me!

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

Neural nets are sounding pretty cool at the moment, but I don’t like the idea of having electrodes planted in my brain!
