Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
Bud is the future of online banking. A totally free way for people to find and use the best financial services from multiple companies in one place. Imagine a financial app store where signing up to and using new products was as easy as a few clicks.
A truly personal, flexible and unified banking experience.

How are you different?
Bud is a totally open and free platform. You don’t need to change banks or get a new card. Instead of loading up your normal internet banking, load up Bud and you are instantly tuned into the new world of finance. We list all financial products, so customers aren’t forced to use one company for investing, or exchanging money, they can use whichever company will benefit them the most. It really puts people in the driving seat of finance.
Why will the company / product do well?
‘Find Use Win’ those are the three words that sum up the key functions of Bud.
‘Find’ focusses on getting users to the products that will help them the most. To do this, Bud twins lifestyle questions – E.G. “do you focus more on ‘the future’ or ‘the now’?” & “do you have a family or not?” – with relevant financial products. So even if a user doesn’t know what they are looking for they can find services that can help them.
‘Use’ describes the ease of adding new services to a person’s dashboard and using them in-line with their other products. No need to leave the site.
‘Win’ is the ultimate end benefit; when you save time on research you create time for life and when you save money you create opportunities to do something new. That’s the winning feeling. We want everyone to feel like that as often as possible.
Where are you based?
We are in a basement in Moorgate, London. #startuplife!

What have been your biggest wins to date?
In a recent finance conference – Money2020 – they said a platform like ours wouldn’t exist until 2025, but we’ve built it, and it will be ready later this year… We thought that was pretty cool.
What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?
We have two key audiences that we are looking to help first. First are the people who are already using a number of financial products. Our service makes it much easier to deal manage all of their products. We are also looking to help young people find the best financial products to achieve their goals. People in their twenties and thirties are open to looking for alternatives to traditional banking. They know technology can make their lives easier; they no longer feel tied down to what their parents did before them.
Tell us about your team?
Our Co-Founders Ed (CEO) and George (CTO) have been friends for over 10 years. Ed is ex-Salesforce where he worked with a number of startups in fintech. George is a self-taught programmer who has built a MOBA game and has a degree in sociology. Jamie (Head of Experience) grew up with George in Yorkshire and has a background in advertising and brand strategy. Merlin (Lead Developer) has traveled the world, has an MENG in Computer Science and has worked on projects for Adobe, Google & Amazon. Chris (Lead Designer) is an experienced visual and audio creative, his portfolio includes Universal Music, ASOS & The Discovery Channel.

What are you long term plans for your product / company?
We are launching our product to individuals first, but the next step is to offer the service to SMEs and families. There are people running businesses all over the country who we can help increase their bottom line. Whether it’s changes to payment systems, fairer currency exchange for stock replenishment, Money management tools… Being the one console that businesses use to ‘Find Use Win’ is our next goal. But our plans don’t stop there. We have some radical thoughts that stretch out in a 10 year forecast! We are here for the long haul.
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
We are all fans of apple; phones laptops ipads… We work off extra wide LG screens that are pretty great for productivity and Merlin and Ed both proudly built their own PCs. Most of the team are into their gaming, so there are PS4s and super HiDef TVs knocking about. Jamie isn’t very techy but is usually the one taking pictures with the office Canon.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
Standing desks would be great, even though it’s not exactly tech. Maybe something that could bring more sunlight from outside into our office… Sort of, a digital sunlight emulator?!
What else can you tell us about your company?
We are quite rare in that we are 100% employee owned. It’s a small detail but it is another dynamic that makes Bud a unique place to work.
How do people get in touch with you?
People can get in touch by twitter @this_is_bud or by emailing [email protected] We are looking to hire a Junior Developer, a Partner’s Manager and another Back-End Developer. So if you like what you’ve heard get in touch!
