Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
Parksen is a parking app that provides easy-to-use, future-forward and affordable parking solutions in metropolitan areas. We’ve built on that base premise and expanded our mission to transforming all sorts of infrastructure that connect to parking. With our ambitions to deploy massive amounts of IoT devices, all focused on different solutions, we will gather relevant information that can help us, and cities, fight back against ever-rising levels of traffic congestion, toxic emissions and decreasing air quality.
This data will be made available to municipalities, companies, parking garages and drivers alike through our parking app, but also through our Green, Smart and Connected City Platform, which can be integrated by any city free of charge.
How are you different?
We plan to play a huge role in integrating Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain driven apps into every-day life. By working closely with local governments and municipalities, we hope to increase societal trust towards these technologies by showing them how it can contribute to cleaner and smarter cities. We are going to instill this trust from the bottom up. By helping small cities at first, we will show them the worth of universal ledgers and big data collection. Data that will be made available to stakeholders free of charge and can be used through the open API and free SDKs that come with our platform.
Why will you do well?
Implementing global infrastructural improvements will cost a lot in terms of time and resources. We have decided to let our ICO run for a full year rather than a few months, keeping in mind the time it takes to generate trust within local governments. Moreover, giving IoT and blockchain technology the chance to develop alongside of us is important as we aim to scale alongside of it.
The prolonged ICO gives us a chance to set aside a fund for interested cities, which we will use to help them transform their city into a Smart City. A longer ICO will give us a chance to forge lasting alliances with IoT developers, municipalities and sustainable technology companies, which in turn will contribute to the strength and growth of our platform and community as we set our global expansion in motion.
Having over 100 Dutch municipalities linked to our MVP parking app, we believe our team has the experience and knowledge (over 15 years of experience within the parking and city development industry) from any possible angle, be it infrastructure, logistics or IT. We will capitalize on this experience to bring international municipalities into the Parksen fold.
Where are you based?
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
When was the company launched?
Parksen was founded in the Netherlands in 2015, soon after we received funding from the Dutch government and individual angel investors. With this we were able to create our MVP Parksen Parking app.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
We successfully added over 100 Dutch cities to our Parksen Parking app and convinced many of them to adopt our cloud-based solution, taking away the need for singular updates per municipality and rather opting for a universal system instead. It took us some time to convince them of our solutions, but the municipalities tried them out, we earned their trust and saw it being implemented by more and more cities as time passed. It is here that the idea for our Green, Smart and Connected City Platform was born. We saw the lack of cooperation and the opportunities for a global standard.
Who are you trying to attract to your product?
Simply put, we are looking for you! Specifically put, we are looking to create and sustain a healthy, strong community of individuals that believe in the necessity of truly sustainable and smart cities. However, we are also looking to attract municipalities, policy advisors and politically active organizations that can assist us with local governments. Finally, we would love to get in touch with skilled, developers that are stationed remotely. Our experts can take care of the basics, but our project with thrive if we have the contributions of outside specialist that are passionate about keeping up with and mastering the very latest technological developments.
What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?
People are prone to tell you to follow your dreams, but we would advise to also take reality into account. Go beyond fantasizing, map out your product and present it to as many people as possible. Embrace your critics, they will end up being your biggest help. Keep going, no matter what set-back you encounter. Don’t get discouraged and above all, learn from your mistakes. Never forget to think from the perspective of your end-users, they will make or break you, and always surround yourself with a talented team that believes in your project.
Tell us about your team?
We carefully picked out a healthy balance between veterans of the parking industry and city development, privacy oriented legal counsel, experienced developers, emphatic marketeers and versatile writers. All of them have varying levels of expertise, but they share a love for emerging technologies and they are passionate about creating a greener, smarter and more connected world for the people.
What are your plans for the future?
During the initial stages of our public ICO, we are going to prepare global expansion to English speaking markets. During the same period, we will look to forge lasting and mutually beneficial alliances with IoT developers, autonomous car manufacturers so that we can start the initial development of our platform. We hope to spend a lot of times presenting our platform during Smart City conventions so that we can get a few pilots running as soon as possible.
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
Something that we have been following with great interest is the development of autonomous cars and the way they use sensor. We believe it ties in nicely with IoT and the implications that it has for futuristic Smart Cities. We can’t wait to develop alongside of these technologies to see what our options will be within a couple of years.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
We hope to find more and more relevant IoT and autonomous vehicle developers to partner up with over the next couple of months. Especially IoT. They will help us achieve our goals in terms of data gathering, which in turn will allow our platform to properly provide end-users with information that can lead to a decrease in congestion and toxic emissions.
Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?
Another useful question would have been with regards to why we are on the Ethereum Blockchain. The short and simple answer to this question is that we are looking into smart contracts between users of the App and Platform and the municipalities that offer up parking. By setting up smart contracts, we can unsure that prices are never higher than originally agreed upon. Add to that transparency (users of the blockchain can always see the smart contracts), additional data security and trust, and you have our reason.
Additionally, we want to utilize the crowdfunding capabilities of an ICO. Why? Because city infrastructure optimization is expensive, even for municipalities themselves. That is why we have reserved 25% of all tokens for a Smart City Fund, which we will distribute to eligible and eager cities that are looking to create smart city solutions. Down that same line, we have reserved 1% for charitable organizations that focus on local or international sustainable solutions.
