What do you do, your elevator pitch?
Known for its award-winning integrated consulting, Nytec’s diverse team includes designers, engineers, manufacturing experts, visionaries/strategists, and technical recruiters who turn ideas into real, first-of-a-kind consumer electronics and IoT products / solutions for Fortune 100 companies.
How are you different?
Nytec is different than other design/engineering consulting companies in that our award winning interdisciplinary teams cross design, engineering, and manufacturing management. All disciplines work seamlessly together under one roof to deliver the ultimate customer experience and business objectives;
Across all functions, our experts have many years of proven experience delivering hundreds of products to tier one companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. We have proven ability to creatively address our client’s needs both domestically in the US, and internationally with our full-time manufacturing experts in Chinese factories, ensuring final production is reflective of the project intent.
For companies looking for a more complete/holistic approach to product development, Nytec provides in-house technical consulting through our Product Innovation Center, where we deliver end-to-end solutions with our state-of-the-art facility and highly technical teams. We can help you conceptualise, strategize, design, engineering, and manage the manufacturing of your product. We have a new Ventures division which will allow us to apply our global capabilities to engage creatively with selected strategic partners across different technology based categories like Home/Enterprise/Industrial-IoT to improve lives around the world.
Why will the company do well?
Nytec’s Product Innovation Center has proven its technical expertise across design, engineering, and manufacturing management in creating innovative consumer electronics, along with IoT-based products, which is a market sector estimated to grow to $560 billion by 2022. We are uniquely positioned to help new and existing clients like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon deliver breakthrough consumer electronics products and we are already helping companies like Carnival Corporation to create first of a kind IoT-based guest experiences really. Nytec is also extending our innovative capabilities into hyper-growth industries like smart-cities and hospitality, to grow today, and into the future.
Where are you based?
We are headquartered in Kirkland, Washington USA, and have national coverage here in the US. We also have offices across India and China for international coverage, allowing our teams to take a hands-on approach to ensure our clients’ needs are met.
When was the company launched?
Nytec started back in the 70’s and has been delivering innovation for over 43 years. We initially provided technical hardware support in the PNW for tech companies like Microsoft. Over the years we broadened our services to include technical staffing under “Client Services Division”, where we can help our clients realise innovation via recruitment and placement of technical staff.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
We have had many “wins” and innovation breakthroughs throughout the 40+ years we have been in business by helping our clients deliver products like the Xbox and the Surface. For one of our most recent projects, we worked with Carnival Corporation to create the world’s first mass implemented consumer-based IoT platform. We are proud to say that this innovation has helped Carnival earn a spot on two of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Company Lists for 2017: Design & Travel.
We spent the past two years helping Carnival Corporation (world’s largest leisure & travel
company with ~47% global share, and over 100 ships, and over 11m annual passengers) strategize, create, and implement a guest-experience IoT platform (Ocean Medallion™ & Ocean Compass™) that revolutionises the hospitality industry.
This solution platform is scheduled to debut on Regal Princess starting November of 2017. It consists of smart wearables which each of the guests will wear throughout their cruise/journey; coupled with a network of smart sensors/readers, plus a portfolio of onboard technology which will enable an elevated, never before seen/experienced set of services, and personalised memories.
The complimentary Ocean Medallion or wearable device is the size of a quarter and can be worn in a variety of ways: as a wristband, pendant, clip or even in your pocket. The Ocean Medallion is the key to opening all the unique IoT-based experiences that have designed to make doors: to the guest’s stateroom, the rest of the ship and unique experiences like personalised services.
Here are a few examples of new experiences that are enabled by this technology breakthrough:
Enjoy your vacation without the hassle of carrying your wallet: Book massage, make dinner
reservations, order drinks, etc.
Stay connected: Navigate around the ship, message family and friends, locate kids or family members, etc.
Manage excursions and activities: Receive invitations based on personal interests
With Here & Now™, if you forgot sunscreen and your kids left their goggles at home, have them and a drink for you delivered to you poolside with ‘There and Then™’, order a glass of wine while dressing for the theatre and it will be waiting for you when you arrive for the show
What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract?
Our primary client list consists of technology companies like the one’s mentioned above (Alphabet, Amazon, Carnival Corporation, Google, Microsoft, etc). With our expertise in creating innovative consumers/enterprise/industrial-IoT hardware solutions, we are now recognized and attracting non-tech companies that are looking to “get into” IoT and consumer technology, for example: smart-hospitality (hotels/arenas/recreational parks/museums/etc.), smart-cities (offices/homes/airports/hospitals/etc.), smart-trackers
(automotive/delivery/transport/asset-management/etc.), smart-fashion/wearables (LV, Prada, Rebecca Minkoff, etc.)… and the list goes on as IoT really touches on our lives in a very broad way. We are selective in terms of the partnerships we make to ensure we stay true to our mission/vision, which is creating award winning products and solutions that will improve people’s lives.
What is the future for IoT and what technologies are driving Connected Cities?
IoT will essentially become as pervasive as lightbulbs one day, but for now, Business Intelligence’s 2017 IoT report estimates grow to reach ~22.5 billion devices by 2021. What that means is that there will be a huge amount of data collected and through AI, it will be converted to address a broad range of personal (e.g. elevate product or service experience through a new level of personalization that has never been experienced before), or business (e.g. allow companies to better target, address, transact, refer, satisfy customers, while improving bottom line profitability), or industrial (e.g. predictive harvesting or maintenance to improve production/yield, while lowering costs), and the list goes on and one.
Connected cities will be driven by the combination of hardware or devices within the IoT network solutions, the network that connects the IoT solution to the users, plus the combination of Remotes (UI), Platforms, and very critically, the Security protocols. These core elements that make up the IoT solution will be the backbone of any connected city. Based on the work we have done for Carnival Corporation, we are perfectly positioned to help create these elements for smart-cities… as essentially, we have helped Carnival Corporation built a smart-city… on a ship.

What are your long term plans for your company?
Long term we plan to continue to grow the Innovation Center and the Client Services offerings we currently have, and in addition, we will balance these out with a third leg of the company called Nytec Ventures. This compliments our current engagement models and enables the company to engage with a more flexible business model and leverage our core product design and development strengths. Our first Nytec Ventures engagement will launch in late 2017. While it’s too early to tell you much about this now we would be happy to keep you in the loop on how this is going and involve you in our launch details as we get closer to mass production.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?
My favourite tech gadgets are those that are seamlessly integrated into my life — where I don’t focus on the technology, but the value I get from it. I believe these are the best products and this is what I focus on with clients. A couple products that come to mind that I use every day are my Ring Wireless Doorbell and my new smart door lock from a young company called LOOCK. Both are focused on my home and this is a very clear opportunity to bring an integrated experience to consumers. While the integration between products is not desirable today, at Nytec we are working on integrated IoT that focuses on removing any barriers and brings a seamless experience to home automation.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
I really wish I could use the new wave of smart assistants, but they simply are not ready yet. When users have to repeat themselves or have to ask the questions in a way that is not natural then the technology becomes obvious, and in my mind then fails its user. I’m excited about where smart technology is headed and there is no doubt that smart assistance in daily life will change the way we interact with each other, with services, and how we do business.
Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?
Nytec is at the forefront exploring sensory design across sight, sound, smell, and touch. We are actively delivering innovation through Interaction design and audio engineering that we believe will take this technology to the next level. We are a collaborative team of experts creating the future together. That’s what keeps me and everyone at Nytec engaged in what we do.
