Darren Guccione is the CEO and co-founder of Keeper Security, Inc. creator of Keeper, the world’s most popular password manager and secure digital vault.

We caught up with him to find out what makes Keeper Security work as a product and as a business:

What is Keeper?

Keeper Security, Inc., is the creator of Keeper®, the world’s most trusted password manager and digital vault that uses a zero-knowledge security architecture and advanced encryption technology to store and secure your passwords and sensitive information covering notes, lists, files, photos and videos. Keeper is used by millions of people and thousands of businesses globally to protect their passwords and digital assets. In addition to its consumer product, Keeper also protects businesses and larger enterprises with Keeper Business and Keeper Enterprise, respectively. In 2018, Keeper Security expanded its product offerings with KeeperChat®, a secure messaging platform.

How is Keeper different from the competition?

Keeper Security sets itself apart from the competition in many ways but I’d like to highlight the following:

  • Ease of Use & Availability on All Devices

Keeper is the most widely available password manager and digital vault in the industry. It is available across all major platforms and devices. Keeper works natively on iOS, Android, Windows Phone/Surface, Mac, PC, Linux and on major web browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE and Edge. Keeper customers can access their vaults in both offline and online environments. Keeper also has KeeperFill™, an integrated and patented feature of Keeper which allows users to autofill their login credentials across mobile apps and browsers on any device.

  • Superior & Trusted Security

Keeper makes significant investments in its security architecture, testing and certifications. It has the most security certifications in the industry covering SOC-2, TRUSTe and a host of others. At a government level, Keeper is both GSA and SAM certified. Unlike most traditional cloud storage providers or service offerings, Keeper is built using a zero-knowledge security architecture. In simple terms, this means that the Keeper customer is the only person who has knowledge of and control over their master password and their encryption keys for accessing their data.

  • Digital Vault Ubiquity

Keeper is more than just a password manager. It is a ubiquitous digital vault that can store notes, lists, files, photos, videos and any other type of private information where security is of paramount importance.

Why should people and businesses choose Keeper?

Keeper Password Manager is the leading password manager on the market.  Keeper is published in 21 languages and is sold in over 100 countries.  Millions of people and thousands of businesses trust Keeper to protect and organize their most sensitive digital assets.  Our superior ease of use and availability on all devices makes us the best choice for many users. Additionally, Keeper makes significant investments in its security architecture, testing and certifications. It has the most security certifications in the industry including SOC-2, TRUSTe. Unlike most traditional cloud storage providers or service offerings, Keeper is built using a zero-knowledge security architecture. In simple terms, this means that the Keeper customer is the only person who has knowledge of and control over their master password and their encryption keys for accessing their data.

Where are Keeper offices located?

Keeper Security has four offices located in Chicago (Headquarters), California (Software Development), Ireland (EMEA Business Sales) and the Philippines (International Customer Support).

When was the company launched?

Keeper Security is a privately-held company that was founded in 2011 by Darren Guccione (CEO & Co-founder) and Craig Lurey (CTO & Co-founder).

What are some of the things you’re proud of at Keeper?

Keeper is used by millions of consumers and thousands of businesses worldwide. Keeper has also been named a  Google Play Editor’s Choice app, as well as named to Google’s 2018 Android Excellence App. It’s been named a 2017 Silver Stevie Award winner for Productivity App and won a 2016 Telecoms Business Award for Consumer Innovation.

Who are your target customers?

Keeper is for any consumer, business or enterprise that deeply cares about their privacy and security. Anyone who uses a smartphone, tablet or computer can benefit from Keeper.  Our password manager and digital vault helps users store website passwords, financial information and other sensitive documents using 256-bit AES encryption, zero-knowledge architecture and two-factor authentication.

What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?

Anyone attempting to start their own business needs to be completely devoted to the endeavor, otherwise, they’ll inevitably succumb to the onslaught of adversities. The most successful minds in business obsess over every detail of their enterprise – from honoring their customers’ needs to critically examining the products or services they’re creating – all while making their company both a fun and fulfilling place to work.

Tell us about your team?

I’m a firm believer in hiring the best talent. It’s not about being the most knowledgeable person when it comes to every facet of your business – it’s about recognizing the individuals who are the most capable and making sure you hire them. Finding and retaining this talent has been one of our greatest successes at Keeper.

What are some of your favourite apps/gadgets?

Obviously, I’m a Keeper user – I can’t live without it, but I also have this shirt that measures WiFi strength at hotspots – it’s pretty cool. I also like Uber, UberEats, Amazon and Slack. I tend to gravitate to apps that make essential components of daily life easier.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Discipline and focus. These are two habits – but they are interconnected as one in my mind. It takes discipline to stay focused and the premise of being focused is absolutely the most critical thing. I see people fail because they lack focus or give up too quickly on something.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Build a great product and have great service – it starts here. If you do these two things right, you will be well on your way and the need for a massive marketing budget, to get you out of the gate the first year, will be mitigated. Great products create virality and buzz.
