Interview with Prof.dr.sc. Dragomir Sundac, Tenured Professor and Scientific Advisor, the President of the Board of IBCC Ltd.

Describe the company – the elevator pitch

IBCC Ltd is an innovative pharmaceutical company that provides new-generation bioactive substances, finalised non-prescription pharmaceuticals, and biomedical programmes for the personalisation and optimisation of health. All our products are patent-protected, trademarked, 100% natural, and with clinically-proven efficacy.

How are you different?

Our differentiation stems from our approach to healthcare.
The existing healthcare industry is focused on treating illnesses. To be more precise, on minimising and eliminating side-effects of illnesses once they occur. Their approach is reactive and highly standardised.
Our focus, on the other side, is on the protection and maintenance of health; on primary and secondary prevention of illnesses. Our approach is proactive and highly personalised.
We emphasise the importance of individuals taking responsibility for their health, and for the industry to join our quest in providing effective proactive healthcare products and services.
Our main R&D focus is Endothelium, an inner lining of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Endothelium was first identified well over a century ago, but it is only recently that it has been recognised as a vital homeostatic organ that regulates key functions in the human body. Endothelial dysfunction is a key trigger for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, endocrine (hormonal) and immune illnesses – the most common illnesses in the world.

Why will the company/product do well?

The future of healthcare is proactive, personalised and preventive.
Our products and services are innovative tools that can facilitate the shift from reactive to proactive healthcare model.
There is a continuous increase in demand for products (health supplements, functional foods and beverages) that provide beneficial health effects and services that assist individuals with their own proactive health care.

Where are you based?

Our headquarters are in Croatia, while our International representative office is in Switzerland.

When was the company launched?

The company was launched in the year 1991. and at that time we focused on providing business consulting services. It was in 2009. when we expanded our activities to pharmaceutical production.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

As a relatively small company, with regards to the industry sector which is dominated by extremely large multinational companies, we were able to achieve significant results that we are very proud of. Our biomedical programmes have been successfully executed in several luxury medical wellness clinics and hotels in Europe. For privacy reasons, we cannot name our patients, but a few of them are country leaders, international businessmen and famous showbiz stars, who have given us trust with their health. We have collaborated with large regional food manufacturers and pharmaceutical producers, and our products have been sold throughout Europe, and abroad. We wish to expand further and are currently searching for new business partners for both our programmes and new products that we have developed and are ready for commercialisation.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product(s)?

The majority of our business is B2B. We do B2C, but it is a very small fraction of our business. Our B2B partners are pharmaceutical companies, food & beverage production companies, and luxury medical wellness clinics and hotels; all of which are eager to provide unique and highly competitive products and services to their consumers and customers.
With us, they do not have to invest years and millions of euros (or US dollars) on scientific research (which, by the way, do not always finish with a positive breakthrough result that can be commercialised) and product development. We do all that for them.
Specifically, to the pharmaceutical companies, we provide our patent-protected, clinically-proven bioactive substances, which can be used for the differentiation and enhancement of existing products, or for production of new, highly competitive products (both prescription and non-prescription).

We also provide them with already developed and registered, ready-to-sell products, which are highly competitive due to their unique characteristics. They are trademarked, their active ingredients are patent-protected and their health effects have been clinically-proven by original, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies (the highest level of clinical studies); and they target the biggest health problems in the World today.
For example, our latest product portfolio consists of three products for the preventive and adjuvant therapy of the cardiovascular system. VasculoSAN® is a product for circulation and maintenance of healthy blood vessels. CORDISAN®Forte is a product for heart health, and HYPECOR®-K is a product for blood pressure regulation. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), cardiovascular illnesses have been the leading cause of mortality in the World, for decades, and yet their treatment remains inadequate worldwide. This is the reason why we have developed effective and affordable products that can help tackle such a widespread public health problem that is both preventable and treatable if detected on time.

All cardiovascular illnesses develop over time, their symptoms are visible when the illnesses have progressed to a dangerous stage. But we know how to tackle this problem, in a highly successful manner. Our focus is first on educating the people about the importance of proactive health care, because every person is responsible for his or her health, and second on providing effective products that really work. Health is essential for the quality of life. If you are not healthy, your life is miserable, no matter how many millions you have on a bank account, how many yachts and real estate you own. Health is true wealth.
This is why our biomedical programmes – which we offer for commercialisation to luxury medical wellness clinics and hotels – are so valuable; because we not only provide a very personalised health assessment (using our superior, non-invasive diagnostics), but once the health status is known we provide concrete solutions in a form of a therapy, using our proprietary products; which are all completely natural and their efficacy has been proven through strict clinical studies. In addition to the personalised therapy, we also do 1-to-1 consultations on health, nutrition and physical activity.

We also cooperate with food & beverage production companies, to whom we provide bioactives. They as well patent-protected and clinically-proven. These bioactives are used for the production of Functional foods and beverages. Functional foods and beverages are a new category of food products which are high in demand due to the health benefits they provide to consumers following a continuous consumption. Once enriched with our bioactive, standard cookies can achieve up to 500% increase in selling price, which is a significant boost to profits.

Tell us about your team?

We have a very strong team of medical doctors and specialists (some of which are prominent academicians), nutritionists, physical therapists with whom we execute our biomedical programmes. We have an effective marketing and sales force headed by my colleague M.Sc. Natasha Svast, who is a Global Product Portfolio Manager and Head of Biomedical Health Management Programme; and we have valuable associates who are covering their specific markets.

What are your long-term plans for your product/company?

We wish to expand to other European markets where we are still not present, that includes Ireland as well, and our special interest is finding suitable business partners with whom we could cover the Eurasian market. We see great potential there.
Naturally, we will continue with our research and development of new products and services.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

Digital technology is helping healthcare organisations provide increasingly personalised, high-level services, in particular with better diagnoses and remote monitoring of patients, and communication.
We are very excited about the developments in wearable technology. Currently, there are wearables that monitor heart rate, sleep patterns, assist with nutrition choices, but they are useful for fitness, not for providing significantly relevant healthcare indicators.

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

With regards to wearables, we would be excited to get a device that could measure relevant risk factors for the development of cardiovascular illnesses, in particular, related to the Endothelium. There are startups that are developing wearables for remote patient monitoring, for health care, but they are based on measuring heart rate, respiratory rate, skin temperature, posture, which is great, but there are more medically relevant, clinical-grade data that is missing.

The reactive approach to healthcare that is currently in place, globally, is expensive and ineffective. The WHO (World Health Organisation) estimates that 60% of all deaths are caused by chronic illnesses, cardiovascular illnesses being the leading cause of death worldwide. Chronic illnesses are long lasting and have an enormous economic implication. They cost billions in direct healthcare costs and productivity losses.
The future of healthcare is in proactive, preventive health care, disease prevention and management.
A new model has to be developed, a model that will include all stakeholders (public, private and non-profit sectors, as well as individuals – citizens) positioned to facilitate the shift from a reactive to proactive health care.
In recent years there has been a proliferation of startups developing innovative preventive healthcare solutions. Such companies should be supported and welcomed.
