By @. Interview with Fabien Peyaud, Co-founder of Herdwatch, the No.1 Farming App for Dairy, Suckler, Beef and now Sheep and Tillage Farmers, for easy compliance. Follow Herdwatch if you’re into Farming, Technology, or both here on twitter.
Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
Herdwatch is an innovative solution for the single biggest burden on modern farms: compliance paperwork. The technology behind Herdwatch enables farmers to record this information on the go in our award-winning app, saving them hours per week and giving them the peace of mind of being compliant, at all times.
How are you different?
Unlike most other farm software, the Herdwatch app is very easy to use (if you can text you can use it), it’s great value for money (less than €2 a week) and is truly mobile. We also convert farm compliance data into usable management information which enables farmers to make informed decisions on-farm in real-time, increasing their productivity and profitability.
Why will the company / product do well?
In just over 2 years we already have 3,500 users with a current year on year growth rate of 400%, so we have been pretty successful to date. The reason we think we will continue to succeed is because we research and address the real needs of our end users, who have a very specific set of requirements. Internet access for example, can be poor at best in rural Ireland, Herdwatch addresses this by offering full functionality offline and then backing up data to the cloud when a connection is available.

Where are you based?
Our core team is based in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, but we are everywhere thanks to the magic of the internet and app stores!
When was the company launched?
Herdwatch went live in February 2014 in Ireland following 2 years of Research and Development backed by FRS Network (Farm Relief Services) and will be launching in the UK in the next few weeks.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
Winning the AIB start-up Academy in 2015 was a real game changer for us, but we have actually received a quite a few other awards, most recently we were awarded the Prince Philip Innovation award by the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers. Our biggest win would have to be the 3,500 farmers using Herdwatch every day to manage their farm compliance.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?
Herdwatch, as the name suggests is targeted primarily towards Dairy and Beef farmers but we are constantly improving our offering, the latest version of Herdwatch has Sheep and Tillage compliance features.
Tell us about your team?
We have a small but dedicated and growing team, we recently took on employee number six, a senior developer. Most of the guys have a farming background or actively farming, we find that this is critical for both customer support and product development.
What are you long term plans for your product / company?
We will be launching Herdwatch UK in the next few weeks and we are constantly looking further afield. We feel Herdwatch has the potential to be a global leader in ag tech, given the right attention and funding. Watch this space!

What are your favourite tech gadgets?
I used to miss a lot of texts and calls on my mobile when I would walk away from my desk, so my favourite gadget is a simple €100 Sony “smartwatch” which alerts me when I get a text or a call or an important alert from our backend systems. It doesn’t do much else but I could not be without it!
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
Like farmers (and everyone else), I hate paperwork, so anything that can reduce it is welcome in our household. For the few bills that are still paper-based, I would love a simple device that would scan them and automatically save them so I can find them later if I need to, and back up the files to a secure location, saving me time, and space!
Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
