Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

DesignWizard is a web based design tool that lets you create images, posters, flyers, party invites – you name it – in seconds

How are you different?

Using our industry knowledge, our team of researchers can pinpoint trends before they happen and our designers create compelling visual content every day, allowing us to respond and stay relevant to our user’s needs. We share this industry knowledge and design expertise with our users so that their content can stand out from the crowd.

Why will the company /  product do well?

We now have a close-knit team of marketers, researchers, software developers and graphic designers. We take our work seriously but not ourselves. Creativity and fun is at the heart of everything we do. This approach allows us to build technology that evolves and responds to the needs of our users.

Our experience in the world of photography and design also means that we spend time researching trends and creating templates that are ahead of the curve. We know what images and styles you need before you need them and add new templates every week.

Where are you based?

We are based in Ballincollig, Cork. We just moved into bigger offices at Westpoint Business Park.

When was the company launched?

Our product was launched to the public in November 2016. We’ve been working on the idea for a the past few years.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

The uptake of our product since the launch has really surpassed our expectations. We’ve received lots of positive feedback from our customers. We welcome all feedback on DesignWizard and take the time to share this with the entire team to keep making our product better. Earlier this week the number of images created by our users exceeded 50,000.

We’ve recently been selected to join the StartUp 100 programme at the upcoming Dublin Tech Summit. It’s a great honour to be selected and we’re really looking forward to meeting with the rest of the Techoratti at the summit.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

At DesignWizard want to democratise design by making it accessible to everyone regardless of technical expertise. We see the product being of greatest benefit from social media users, business users small to medium sized enterprise who don’t have access to design resources internally. We also see users signing up for DesignWizard to create posters and flyers for clubs, voluntary groups, charity work or simply to create birthday cards and baby shower invitations.

Tell us about your team?

At Design Wizard, our people are our magic ingredient! We believe that each and every member of our team contributes something unique and valuable to the organisation.

We have an international team of software engineers, graphic designers, researchers, customer service and marketing staff at our offices in Cork. We create everything in-house from doing photo shoots to creating icons, backgrounds and tutorial videos for DesignWizard.

What are your long term plans for your product / company?

Our long-term plan is to deliver DesignWizard internationally and grow it to over 2 million users worldwide.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

Gosh where do I start, it’s gadget heaven in DesignWizard! Our photography team recently got their hands the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and they are super happy with the results. We’re using drone technology more and more to get killer still images and backgrounds for DesignWizard. We’ve got our own DJI Phantom 4 drone and it goes all the places that our photographers just can’t reach and it never complains of vertigo. On the software engineering side we’re a cloud native product,  all of our code runs on Amazon Web Services. I love the power and flexibility that cloud computing offers us – we can scale our servers up and down in minutes based on our customers demands. Probably the most surprising gadget you’ll find around the office is a Matias retro, bluetooth mechanical keyboard. One of our developers (who shall remain anonymous for now!)  just loves the feeling of tapping out code on a mechanical keyboard that has been especially engineered to click quietly!

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

Without a doubt a Virtual Reality Headset. Every wizard needs an immersive 360 degree experience at least once a day , unfortunately this story is slightly lower in the product backlog but stay tuned.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked

Well if you’d asked me how many programming languages it takes to develop DesignWizard I’d have been delighted to tell you that the answer is exactly one. From top to tail we use JavaScript for every part of the system. JavaScript is the default language for the world wide web, pretty much every browser support it. With the rise of node.js JavaScript is fast becoming the language of choice on the server too. To paraphrase The Beatles “All you need is JavaScript” and we’re definitely Beatles fans here.
