Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
CRITICAL Software provides systems and software services for safety, mission and business-critical applications, helping to ensure clients meet the most demanding quality standards for safety, performance and reliability.
How are you different?
We have a very long history working in critical markets with some very high-profile clients across the world.
We operate to incredibly high-quality standards and are one of the few companies in the world that have both waterfall and agile delivery methods rated at CMMI Level 5.
Finally, at the heart of our business is a strong sense of culture and values, which guide us in everything we do: from the way we interact with our clients to the way we support one another internally.
Why will you do well?
We don’t take shortcuts. Our growth is organic and built on the talent and hard work of our people.
Where are you based?
We are a metanational company with offices in Portugal, the UK, Germany and the US.

What have been your biggest wins to date?
Our very first client was NASA, where they sought us out to test their critical systems in their space laboratories. This quickly led to work with ESA too. Some of our bigger, more recent clients that we are able to talk about include Leonardo, Continental, EDP, The Data Communications Company, the Portuguese Navy, the Irish Coast Guard, Alstom, Siemens, Vodafone and many more. We work across a lot of different industries!
Who are you trying to attract to your product?
Businesses that cannot afford to settle for anything other than reliable software and systems – whether it is because the software in an aeroplane is safety-critical, and the consequences of failure would be catastrophic for passengers and the airline company, or because the reliability of a bank’s software is business-critical, and impacts performance and security. What unites our clients is the fact that the technology they use has to be high-performance and as close to failsafe as possible.
What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?
Know your market and your clients, and build solutions that actually tackle the problems they face. This is often more difficult than it may seem, and many businesses make the mistake of building the solutions they want to engineer instead of the solutions that transform their clients’ lives. Also, whatever your business does, do it with a smile!

Tell us about your team?
We are a diverse group of experts with a wide range of skills in software, systems and technology. As an international company, we are a mix of interests and nationalities, and a positive model of global cooperation. One thing that we’re all passionate about is technology that makes a real difference to people’s lives. We also like to work hard and play hard: and we regularly participate in social events and contribute to wider community initiatives across our different locations.
What are your plans for the future?
We aim to continue our year-on-year growth by driving technological standards of excellence in the markets in which we operate. More immediately, we have just launched a new Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning division which is going to bring businesses closer to being able to use advances in this area in a more practical way. Another developing area that has huge potential for business is digital transformation, for which we also have exciting plans, so watch this space!
