How are you different?

Not only is our founding team made of ebike industry experts, our team is comprised of mostly women in this male dominated tech landscape. We know the industry inside and out, and have tackled every issue that e-bike users and manufacturers have had with electric bicycles. From making it ultra light, changing the regular battery position from frame to seat-post, (optimal center of gravity in weight distribution making it a more comfortable ride) and making it quick-release in order to have it be easy to service and upgrade (with no special tools required) are the main innovations we’ve made.

Why will you do well?

We’re not coming out of the blue with an e-bike because we want to ride a trend wave. We’ve been manufacturing e-bikes for other companies, and have contracts with transit city bikes in Montreal. We’re very well prepared for the manufacturing and delivery side of the operation. We’ve also developed a product knowing exactly what users want, and we’ve received some amazing feedback from people from all over the world. Once people try CARBO, whether they’re avid cyclists or just casual users, they become believers.

Where are you based?

Our team is based in Montreal, New York and China.

When was the company launched?

We’ve been working on the manufacturing and testing of CARBO for the past two years, and our crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo launched officially on September 27th 2018.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

CARBO is one the of the first e-bikes to be be EN-3800 certified, which means you can travel by plane with the bike and battery. It’s a pretty big win for us.

But on another level, a major win has been successfully launching our campaign and having our backers be so excited to be a part of our journey. We’ve had a few of our backers actually come and try the bike, and their positive reactions were all the push we need to keep moving forward.

Who are you trying to attract to your product?

Electric bikes have a reputation for being an “old” or “lazy” people product. We’re here to change that. We see Carbo as an ebike made for people living active lives in the city. It’s not only a convenient way to commute, but it’s also versatile enough to double up as an exercise tool. It’s much less of an investment than a car, which is great for young professionals, it’s ecological, but it’s also a great leisure bike for others who want to take it easy in their off time. It’s a bike that’s meant to fit into anyone’s life, rather than having people struggle to adapt to it. It’s truly made for everyone.

What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?

I guess all I can really say is, know your strengths and build a team to complement that. Don’t rely only on outside opinions, because sometimes, your gut makes the best decisions for your company. Lastly, I would say to believe in whatever it is you’re selling, because whether it’s a product, or a service, if you don’t want to buy it, why would anyone else?

Tell us about your team?

The CARBO team is the culmination of an international partnership based between Montreal, NYC, and China: bringing together several players from the bike industry, each with their own expertise in different sectors. Together, they have joined forces to design the lightest, most durable electric bike, carefully engineered for easy upgrade & replacement parts.

– Sebastian and Lyne: Electric bike manufacturing experts from the makers of Veco and Velo transit, a Montreal based startup specialized in electric bikes

– Charles: A materials engineer specialized in the manufacturing processes for carbon bike frames

– Sam: An industrial designer with previous experience in designing bicycle frames for renowned companies

– Jacky: A 3D modeler responsible for graphics and design validation in terms of components, features, and proportions

What are your plans for the future?

We want to keep innovating in the electric mobility sector. We truly believe in the power of crowdfunding as well. There’s something so motivating about growing your company with your backers.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

Aside from e-bike? Our favourite gadgets tend to be in the same vein. We love electric unicycles.

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

I don’t know if this counts, but we could definitely use a virtual assistant or two. In fact, we’re going to look into it now.

Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?

CARBO’s Indiegogo campaign will be live until November 24th so it will be available at a heavily discounted price, and we will begin delivery in March 2019.
