Describe the company

Augustus Cullen Law is one of Ireland’s oldest law firms, established in 1887. We are well-known for our work in the medical negligence field, but we also have teams working in other legal areas. Overall, we employ more than 50 people.

How are you different?

Our heartfelt belief that the ordinary person is entitled to justice informs everything we do whether we are involved in a medical negligence case or are advising on contract law. We’re proud to be involved in the community.

Where are you based?

We originate from Wicklow where we were founded in 1887 by the late Frank Kennedy. In December 2015, we opened an office in Smithfield, Dublin, and we’re greatly enjoying our proximity to the startup hub in D7.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Each case we take on for our clients represents something to us. The field of medical negligence is complex as emotional and financial factors are present. Harm has come to our clients’ loved ones and there are often far-reaching consequences they have to live with. The financial settlements we secure for our clients go a long way to improving the quality of life they can expect, but ensuring justice is done also helps people recover from the tragedies that they have faced.

Last year, we secured €6.75 million plus legal costs for a young woman of 18 who had been badly injured in a car accident at the age of nine.

We are also working with members of the Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS) pension scheme to bring a case against the State and various companies to prevent their pensions being cut.

What type of people are you trying to attract?

Since we are a full service law firm, we can work with anyone who has a legal requirement. Of interest to Irish Tech News readers is that we work with the startup community. We’re proud of the role Irish startups play in the country and we love the success stories that we hear coming through. But we’re lawyers! We want to make sure that founders and entrepreneurs are paying attention to the legal matters while they build their high octane enterprises.

Tell us about your team

As mentioned, we’re made up of a team of over 50 people. We’re a group of committed legal professionals who enjoy seeing how the law can be practically applied to make a difference to people’s commercial and personal lives. We have seven partners and 11 associate solicitors, and we place importance on gender diversity. Day to day interactions see us hard at work but there’s a great camaraderie amongst the team. Nearly all of us love coffee!

What are the long term plans for your firm?

We’d like to continue to build on the legacy the firm already has. Most of our clients are referred to us through word-of-mouth and we take our commitment to justice for the ordinary person seriously.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

Just about every team member runs their day according to the calendar on their iPhones.
