This week I attended the launch of a clever new app for beauty consumers. The launch featured a panel including Gillian Moore, MD of Fuschia Make-up, Jackie Kelly, MD of McCauley Health and Beauty, Gillian Fitzpatrick, CCO of Maximum Media (her.ie), Wendy Slattery, CEO of Beauty Buddy, and the gorgeous Glenda Gilson who ably and knowledgeably chaired the panel.

The app was conceived by Beauty Buddy founders, Wendy Slattery and Tracy Leavy who told me that their backgrounds are in the data and technology fields rather than beauty. In fact, the idea for the app came about after these two enterprising women were searching for a makeup brush and simply wanted to know which brush was best for their needs. Beauty Buddy is available now on the Apple and Play stores for free download.

Why you should download it

Wendy Slattery said, “Anywhere you are, if you see a product just scan the code and we’ll tell you if it’s any good or not.”

So when you’re in a shop or airport you can scan the product barcode to instantly see the manufacturers description along with tutorials and relevant information. But most importantly you will see ratings and reviews from fellow app users (your global beauty buddies). This is good news for consumers who want to check before buying if the product they’re looking at will do what they want. It’s also good news for the beauty industry as it helps to ease customer concerns.

Beauty Buddy is creating a community where you can have circles for people you trust. The power is that people trust other people, not companies. In the app, you can follow friends and influencers that you trust to be honest and unbiased in their reviews.

Great for Influencers

Would you love to have a snoop around that beauty influencers makeup bag? Well, a lovely feature of this app is the virtual makeup bags that are totally snoopable! Every user can place favourite products in their makeup bag and can even have several makeup bags all categorised and labelled. This feature will be of particular interest to beauty bloggers and influencers who may find that they are constantly being asked for product recommendations.

By setting their makeup bags to be viewable to others, influencers can simply direct enquirers to have a look in their makeup bag. Influencers and beauty bloggers will also relish the opportunity to have their recommendations showcased on this app which will add to their discoverability and credibility.

Data Analytics for Industry

All panel speakers commented on the easy to use analytics that are available to manufacturers and suppliers. The analytics are there to make better user experience by giving useful statistics to suppliers and letting them know which demographic loves or hates their product. The data supplied incorporates stats such as dwell times, wishlists and abandoned cart products along with demographics for each. However, Wendy assured us that personal information is not collated for analytics and that the app is fully GDPR compliant.

You spent HOW MUCH?!

Gillian Fitzpatrick spoke about how interest in beauty products is constant. Because so many her.ie readers like to keep up-to-date with the latest beauty trends, beauty content is their 12-month performer. She observes that products in the mid-range price brackets seem to be most popular and many consumers find that price is not always the best indicator of what will work best for them. While they may be willing to splash out on special products, something more cheap and cheerful will often prove to be their favourite go-to item.

Shockingly, Wendy Slattery told us that the average woman spends more than €80,000 on beauty and cosmetic products over her lifetime. So maybe the peer reviews will help consumers to save money and there is certainly a lot to save.

More Statistics

According to Bazaar Voice, 66% of consumers trust consumer reviews and 48% of consumers consult reviews before making a health and beauty purchase online. Also, according to Google (IPSOS), 82% of smartphone users consult their phones on purchases they’re about to make in-store. So this app is certainly timely and convenient and likely to become the most useful beauty tool in every beauty consumers kit.
