Astronomers and Joycean scholars to meet at ‘Dunsink Time’

Astronomers and Joycean scholars will explore the many references in Ulysses to ‘Dunsink Time’ and astronomy, today, Monday, 11th June 2018 at 7:30pm at DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Dunsink Lane, County Dublin.

The event ‘Joycetime at Dunsink’ will be held in the Meridian Room at Dunsink Observatory, now part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), where Ireland’s clocks were set from, between the 18th to 20th centuries.

James Joyce’s Ulysses makes reference to Ireland’s unique time zone, Dublin Mean Time, at various points throughout the work, which he refers to as ‘Dunsink Time’.

‘Joycetime at Dunsink’ is being run as part of the Bloomsday Festival, celebrating 16th June 1904, the day depicted in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses.

Attendees at the event will get to enjoy readings, discussions and live music with contributions from:

• Professor Luke Drury, DIAS;
• Des Gunning, Joycean Scholar; and
• Darina Gallagher, Joycean Scholar and Musician.

The event is free to attend, though members of the public should register in advance.
