A state-of-the-art app designed to bridge the gap in communication between doctor and patient following consultations has won the prestigious MedApps Challenge, sponsored by Cognate Health. Emma Doyle and Anna Clancy, Biomedical Science students at University College Cork won the UCC Biomedical Science and Medical Research and Technology Societies competition, which was hosted in association with MTU Biomedical department.
The second-year students receive a cash prize as well as a support and mentorship programme in clinical governance, occupational health, and sales and marketing facilitated by Cognate Health.
Commending the winners, CEO of Cognate Health Paula Cogan said: “Cognate Health is delighted to continue to enhance its strong links with cutting edge areas of academic research through the sponsorship of the MedApps Challenge. Digital technology and a connected health model are set to transform the delivery of occupational health in the next decade and it is wonderful to witness the entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and creativity that exists in the area among current third level students through this Challenge.”
UCC and MTU Students Begin Their Quest to Create the Next Best Medical App
The MedApps Challenge, open to UCC and MTU students, was created to provide a platform for students to devise a concept for the next best medical application. The competition saw a shortlist of eight finalists and the overall winners — Emma Doyle and Anna Clancy — devised their concept MedMapp to bridge the gap in communication between doctor and patient following GP consultations by providing a consultation summary, advice for prevention and follow-up care.
Speaking on their win, Emma and Anna stated: “We are both extremely passionate about our course because it gives us the opportunity to combine our love for science and people. We love the intellectual side of medicine as well as the implementation of our skills in the clinical setting”.
Emma and Anna: “We are lucky that medicine is such a broad degree, and we look forward to getting exposure to the different areas of medicine in the coming clinical years and discovering what most piques our interest for our future careers. This competition has given us the chance to explore the business, technological and e-health aspects of medicine, a side of medicine that we plan to delve into in the future”.
