An Irish Story: How the Heart is Guiding App Development

Altruism is important in today’s world and the digital world as well. Perhaps this is the reason Ireland has a number of apps that show how developers are making a difference.

Why is Altruism Growing?

Today’s generation is pretty altruistic compared to previous generations. Helpful apps are not only being introduced but gaining popularity relatively quickly.

It seems like the drive to help others is so strong that people look for careers that allow them to lend a hand.

Of course, there are obvious choices, such as a doctor or teacher, but there are other choices like app developers.

There could be many things driving altruism. It could be people’s ability to connect with others online and sympathize. It could also have something to do with living through economic issues that have made people more willing to help others.

Apps That are Making a Difference

There are a number of apps that have been developed in Ireland and throughout the UK that are worth mentioning. These applications highlight how much technology is helping society.

The following are some interesting apps that have been introduced:

Fighting Domestic Violence

The Cithrâh Foundation, with the help of app developers, has created an app to help people fight domestic violence. The app allows the victim to record images, notes, and any other helpful information about a particular incident. The information from this incident is immediately removed from the phone and stored remotely.

No one but the victim can access the information using a personal code. This is an important feature because domestic abuse can be quite traumatic, making it hard to remember dates and exact events. Having an app like this allows the victim to record as it happens, and the victim can go back to that information when needed.

Help With Relocation

Some people in Ireland decided to relocate to places like Toronto. The problem is relocation can be a bit of a shocker for a person. An immigrant may have a lot of questions upon arrival, such as questions about immigration status or where to shop for calling cards.

App developers from Ireland saw a need and decided to fill it for people from Ireland who were relocating to Toronto. The app is there to help connect immigrants to services and locations of interest. It is called the Irish App-Proved, and it is there to make transitioning into this new country a little easier for Irish immigrants. Hopefully, there are more apps like this to help immigrants across the world adjust to their new homes.

Helping Families With Sign Communication

Learning to sign is not the easiest thing for a family. Tutors and teachers do their best, but even that is not enough at times. This is the reason families need all the tools they can get, including an app.

The app is called StorySign, and it is meant to teach kids how to sign with Irish dialect using stories they can follow along to. There are many dialects out there, so making sure a child learns the correct one is important, and this app takes that into consideration.

This tool is also interactive. Parents know most kids are raised on technology, so this is a great tool to help a child continue his or her studies.

Finding the Perfect Roommate

An issue that plagues many in Ireland, especially college students, is finding a good roommate while they attend school. A lot of issues can get in the way of finding a good roommate. For one, a student does not know if he or she will match with a potential roommate.

This new app is meant to help a person find the right match using all sorts of tools. It allows both parties to know each other a little better, and it helps match potential roommates using things like lifestyle and hobbies. This type of matching system helps to improve the chances that the roommates end up getting along.

The app is actually becoming quite popular in Ireland, and it is called RooMigo. The app can be compared to another popular app called Tinder. Now, Tinder is a little more about finding a romantic match, but it is easy to see why the comparison can be made.

Apps Helping to Fight Depression

Depression is running rampant all over the UK, and it is something that needs to be addressed somehow. Mental health centres are definitely doing their part, and now some of these centres are beginning to use technology to reach more people.

NHS developed an app to help teenagers fight depression more effectively. The app is called Calm Harm, and it helps teenagers understand their feelings a little better as well as connect them with helpful resources. The app offers supportive texts and video counselling, which could help a teenager who is feeling down feel a little better and not so alone.

Granted, this is just one of many apps attempting to help teenagers and adults. It is important to use these apps as a resource and to seek professional help when needed, which is something these applications tell users to do.

These are just some of the ways app developers are changing the world and truly making an impact in Ireland as well as surrounding regions. There is no telling how far apps can be taken as more people buy smartphones. The impact an app can have is immeasurable, and that is definitely going to motivate people to do more for the world.
