Algorand, the blockchain developed by cryptography pioneer and Turning award winning scientist Silvio Micali, was presenting its first Meetup in Dublin this week. Hosted by Deloitte in its EMEA Blockchain Labs, Jason Weathersby, senior developer advocate, went into a deep diva on the workings of the Algorand blockchain.
Introduced first by Chris Hurley, head of investor relationships and business development, for Algorand, he argued that the 2.5 billion millennials that don’t trust the banks can’t be all wrong. “The world has the challenge of finding new ways of creating trust – replacing the traditional institutions that have so let us, and them, down,” he said.
Algorand successfully raised $62 million during the summer in private equity from VC giants such as Pillar and USV and has chosen senior hard hitting business leaders and top academics to steer the project.
The testnet is already out there and the mainnet is due to go live in March /April.
”We are a well-funded and well-structured organisation – and we are hiring,” Chris said.
Jason then led the developer group through the Algorand technical architecture. Jason explained that distributed applications on blockchain appealed to him as he was at heart a conspiracy theorist – but he recognised that the industry needed to attract more developers overall.
“Did we mention we are hiring?” he said.
At the heart of the Algorand protocal is the Verifiable Random Function (VRF) which operated in a similar fashion to a lottery. Jason stepped the audience through the VRT functions and how Alogrand practices consensus through soft committee selection and verification by secondary committees. Features such as safety meant forks were impossible. If the network did not agree then it did not upgrade.
Unlike previous blockchains, the Algorand platform solves the “blockchain trilemma” by offering the true decentralization, scalability and security that businesses need while also distributing opportunity to everyone who builds applications or transacts on the Algorand platform.
Algorand provides an infrastructure for existing businesses and new projects to operate globally in the emerging decentralized economy.
Algorand’s first-of-its-kind, permissionless, pure proof-of-stake protocol supports the scale, open participation, and transaction finality required to build systems for billions of users
