Advancing the Bioeconomy: BBioNets Showcases Regional Insights and Collaborative Innovation

BBioNets, an EU-funded project coordinated by Munster Technological University, is driving progress in the bioeconomy. By uniting regional stakeholders, sparking innovation, and tackling industry-specific challenges, this initiative paves the way for sustainable bio-based solutions.  Through cutting-edge research, strategic collaboration, and shared expertise, BBioNets is unlocking new opportunities for a greener, more sustainable future.

On 27 February 2025, BBioNets will participate in the “Industrial Hemp: Opportunities for Agriculture and Other Sectors in Ireland” conference, organised by Teagasc. The event, which will be opened by the Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, and the Marine Martin Heydon TD, brings together key industry leaders to discuss the potential of hemp-based bioeconomy solutions.

BBioNets will feature as a panellist in the “Textiles and Biocomposites” session, where Carmen Girón Domínguez from MTU’s Circular Bioeconomy Research Group will present preliminary outputs from BBioNets research. The presentation will highlight the potential of already developed EIP-AGRI Operational Group projects and future ones, specifically those ones focused on bio-based technologies for the valorisation of hemp biomass and other bioeconomy innovations beneficial to Ireland’s circular bioeconomy.

As part of its mission, BBioNets also facilitates the Irish Forest and Agriculture Network (Irish FAN), an open-access network where stakeholders can engage, collaborate, and access key bioeconomy research insights.

Spotlight on Regional Dynamics: Exploring the Bioeconomy with Insights and Innovations across BBioNets Regions

The project’s latest campaign, Bioeconomy Overview, is shedding light on critical themes within the bioeconomy. This initiative provides a series of engaging articles that delve into regional dynamics, sector challenges, and opportunities for innovation.

As part of the campaign, BBioNets has already unveiled the first wave of articles, offering succinct and accessible overviews of topics such as:

  • Biomass Availability: Understanding regional capacities and their potential for sustainable use.
  • Valorisation Potential: Exploring opportunities to add value across bio-based sectors.
  • Sector-Specific Challenges: Identifying obstacles and uncovering solutions tailored to regional contexts.

These articles, available now on the BBioNets website, provide stakeholders with practical knowledge and insights tailored to the unique characteristics of each region. Additional articles will be released in the coming weeks, ensuring a comprehensive look at the bioeconomy landscape.

Coming Soon: Key Takeaways from Cross-Fertilisation Meetings

Building on the success of the Bioeconomy Overview campaign, BBioNets will soon release an in-depth series of articles capturing the most valuable insights from its recent cross-fertilisation meetings. These gatherings brought together diverse stakeholders to exchange expertise, foster collaboration, and inspire innovation within the bioeconomy.

The forthcoming articles will distil the highlights of these dynamic discussions, providing actionable takeaways that empower stakeholders to drive progress in their respective sectors. By showcasing successful strategies and collaborative efforts, BBioNets aims to catalyse meaningful advancements across its network of regions.

Commenting on the announcement, Circular Bioeconomy Research Group and MTU Researcher Carmen Giron Domingeuz said, “There is a great potential for Irish Circular Bioeconomy through EIP-AGRI Operational Group projects. The BBioNets project seeks to disseminate the work of Operational Groups that have developed a circular bioeconomy activity, so Ireland and other regions could learn from them, collaborate with them, and potentially implement its bio-based technologies.”
