By @SimonCocking. Great interview with Flavien Plouzennec UX Designer . Ex-digital chief editor  who will be appearing at LavaCon in Dublin. The LavaCon Conference on Content Strategy and UX is coming to Dublin on May 22nd, see more here.

LavaCon takes place 22-24 May, Croke Park Conference Center

1 min pitch for what you are doing now?

I am a User Experience Designer at Xwerx, a Dublin-based UX agency. We provide user research and content strategy services for various clients, from startups to enterprise. My background is a bit unusual as, in a previous life, I was a journalist and an editorial manager for a French new media group. I’ve kept an interest in the news media industry and their digital transformation.

What will you be talking about at this event?

The talk is a snapshot of some of the most advanced analytics practices from media companies like Buzzfeed, the Guardian and the Swiss newspaper Le Temps. Legacy media companies are often “super siloed”. There is this historical “wall” dividing the newsroom and the business side. Also, journalists are sometimes suspicious about analytics, which they think conflict with their mission to tell the readers “what they need to know” as opposed to “what they want”. Fortunately, more and more medias are moving forward and are developing new analytics capability, combining innovative tools and a smarter “data-informed” culture. We’ll see how.

What inspired you to speak at it?

The panel is very diverse with speakers coming from various countries and backgrounds. I expect to learn plenty!

How was the last 12 months, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?

I’m working for an agency so I have been involved in several projects for several clients. Recently, we’ve been playing with public data regarding property prices in Ireland. It’s a pro bono project. We’d like to make it easier for house seekers to assess the value of a house they are interested in, based on recent nearby sales. There’s some lack of transparency in the bidding process, which we think sometimes contributes to inflating prices.

Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?

Smashing Magazine, UX Mag and the Nielsen Norman Group website are great resources for anyone interested in User Experience and Interaction Design. I would also attend design meetups in Dublin, starting with Dublin UX, which has now several declinations for front-end development (Dublin CSS) and content strategy.

How can people find out more about what you are working on?

I’m trying to post regularly on our agency’s blog or on my personal blog. My problem is that I spend too much time procrastinating on Twitter @flavienp.
