RTÉ Player viewers loved their soaps, drama and news in 2014, with the top ten programmes including Fair City, Home and Away, EastEnders, the huge RTÉ drama hit Love/Hate and the World Cup 2014.
Home and Away was the most viewed programme in 2014 with over 4 million streams, while, RTÉ drama, Fair City was the second most-viewed programme with 3.3 million streams throughout the year.
The Late Late Show, was viewed over 1.6million times, with the most popular RTÉ Player episode being The Late Late Toy Show, which received 205,000 streams
The fifth series of Love/Hate received over 900,000 streams, with episode 4 – broadcast on RTÉ One on the October bank holiday weekend – being streamed 207,000 times on RTÉ Player. The final episode in the six-part series was streamed 147,000 times
The top sports event on RTÉ Player in 2014 was the FIFA World Cup, which was streamed over 2 million times throughout the tournament. A survey conducted by RTÉ on viewing habits around the World Cup confirmed that 49% of the audience who watched a World Cup match on RTÉ Player also watched the live game on RTÉ2 at the same time, highlighting the power of second screen.
News and Current Affairs also continued to perform strongly online with both the Nine O’Clock and Six-One news bulletins claiming spots in the RTÉ Player Top 10 with over 1.6 million streams between them. These figures only account for News watched on RTÉ Player and are in addition to the RTÉ News Now App which had over 1.4 million downloads, and 634 million page impressions in 2014.
In total, RTÉ Player had over 51million streams in 2014, up by 11% on 2013 and an average of 1.7million browsers per month. 18% of RTÉ Player browsers and 12% of streams were from international audiences.
There was a marked shift to mobile consumption over the 2014 Christmas period, with the RTÉ Player App being downloaded an additional 19,000 times, bringing total downloads of the App to 1.5 million.
Usage of the RTÉ Player is highest among 18-34s and ABC1s. The service is available across 8 platforms – iPod, iPhone, iPad, Android, PC, Xbox 360, Samsung Connected TV, and on UPC’s catch-up service.
