This is Nest’s first floodlight camera and it makes sense for them to supply this option. The fact that it is wired will require some thought about whether it will be the right option for you. Naturally battery operated for outside can be a pain if you have to replace batteries in the middle of winter, during a howling storm.

As often it tends to be the time when batteries fail on an outdoors device. Wired therefore is a good option as an alternative, though you will need to think through if you have a suitable electricity source, or if you have to open up a hole in the wall to bring it through, which will not work for all locations.

You will have to sign up for Nest Aware too for it to deliver all the functionality on offer, which is another factor to consider in the ‘optional – but necessary’ aspect to this device. You will also need the Google Home App, to be able to access and adjust the options and to review footage. The data is encrypted as it travels from the device to the cloud which is good, though it might also make sense to keep an eye out for any potential stories about breaches or exploits.

The footage is quite good, and does have the fun, cool features of being able to distinguish between different types of moving bodies, animals, humans, etc. The light is bright and shines widely and effectively. Some may feel that the cost is at the upper end of the range for similar products.

Perhaps Google’s thinking is that if you have already bought previous Nest related products, then you are already invested in the product range, and therefore less likely to mix and match with other products by competitors. If you can live with the higher price then this is a good product, solid, well made, with a good brightness for the area you want to illuminate.
