Doro 8050 reviewed
This phone has a lot of good UX features. The buttons can be sized up, which helps for those of us with less than perfect eyesight. It has a good feel to it, is not too big, which has become a bit of a feature creep for some phones these days. It was easy to boot up and use. Here it was easy to use by all of us working adults, and also by the younger generation too, who all got it very quickly and were comfortable using it.
The only funny, strange, anomaly, was that when we mentioned it to the in-laws, closer to 80 than 70, and we high lighted the elderly alert feature, this evoked a more negative reaction than you might have expected. We explained what it did, and the older person in question then recoiled in a negative way, and declared, ‘oh, well, I’m not that old, I don’t think I quite need that sort of option on my phone’. This can be the interesting and counter intuitive responses that you see to some features, which, back in the laboratory, seemed like an excellent feature. Whereas out in the wild / real world, it became a negative feature about the phone, for the elderly person themselves.
This would suggest that the branding of this key, elderly alert feature, might need some reworking if it is to avoid evoking negative feelings among its intended target audience.
