As Veganuary is upon us, Melanie Boylan spoke with Bernat Ananos of Heura Foods about the movement and why it has been building up momentum.
Every January is when people sign up to go Vegan for 1 month and it’s getting bigger and bigger every year. Last year, more than 400,000 people signed up, more than double the number from two years previously (168,500) and up from just 3,300 in 2014, in its first year.
In this podcast we hear about the advancements that have been made and why COVID has actually speeded up the changeover.
Heura is a 100% plant-based meat start-up. Its mission is to create solutions that make the current food system obsolete and accelerate the transition to a world in which animals are out of the protein production equation entirely. Its Mediterranean roots are reflected in its products, which all have a clean label, high nutritional values, and exceptional flavour. Founded by food activists Marc Colona and Bernat Añaños, Heura was born in April 2017 and is currently present in 3,000 points of sale in 13 countries around the world: Spain, Andorra, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, Egipt, Canada and Chile .
Bernat Añaños is Heura’s co-founder and Chief Social Movement Officer. A passionate food activist, he and Marc Coloma founded Heura in April 2017 as “just two millennials trying to change the world”. Before co-founding Heura, Bernat had an international career that ranged from institutional communications at the European Parliament to launching start-ups in China. His clear priority is to devote his energy to projects with a positive impact. Bernat met Marc Coloma at an entrepreneurship program in Barcelona and they decided to launch Heura together. Founded in April 2017, Heura is currently present in 13 countries around the world. Bernat currently leads the Social Movement department of the start-up.

I wanted to do something that would work around them initially and obviously needed something flexible. Other jobs and roles just didn’t allow for this. I had always been a stay-at-home Mum since having the kids and wanted to continue this for as long as possible, so setting up my own business seemed like a logical conclusion.
I have now trained over 2,700 people in the last 7 years either in groups or on a one to one basis. On stage, online or in person through Keynotes, Workshops or Ongoing Courses. I can help you feel supported and confident in your new skills. Contact me today!
