One of Europe’s most exciting technology symposiums, running for over 10 years, is back. Tech Summit 2020, has reinvented itself as it@cork Tech Fest has redeveloped its entire plan and taken its event online. Organisers say that demand for the event, which was originally due to take place in May, has remained very strong hence their decision design a completely virtual 5-day experience which is free for members, with tickets also for sale to the general public.

The revamped it@cork Annual Tech Fest Conference will be held virtually as a week-long technology festival from 14th -18th September 2020, supported by its learning network it@cork Skillnet. This festival of tech will be a virtual feast for anyone with a passion for technology, with a stellar line up of speakers including, Bobby Healy CEO and founder of Manna Drone Delivery, Tom Raftery Global VP and Futurist at SAP, Dr. Colin Clarke, Principal Investigator at  NIBRT  and Vanessa Tierney, CoFounder of Abodoo.

Speaking of the virtual tech fest, Anthony O’ Callaghan, Chairperson of it@cork,

“We are all living in extraordinary times, but I think if the resilience of businesses and workers the length and breadth of the country has taught us anything it’s that the show must go on. The Tech Summit has grown beyond expectations and the numbers travelling to Cork for the event were growing year on year. it@cork turned virtual this year embracing technology with no limits, hosted a range of webinars with attendees from all over the world, a virtual AGM etc. and because COVID hasn’t dampened the appetite of our attendees, we believe it was incumbent upon us to work as hard as we could over the last few months, to design and deliver an exceptional virtual conference that will add genuine value to the tech knowledge of those who attend”.

Tech Summit 2020 will focus on and explore 5 key topics:

  1. Cyber Security: Designing for a New Era of Threats and Complexity
  2. Smart Cities: Are Smart Cities a smart idea?
  3. Future of Work
  4. The digitalisation of BioPharma Manufacturing
  5. Future of Education

Tech in Cork

it@Cork say the tech sector in Cork continues to perform very strongly and continues to be the fastest-growing sector in the region.

Mr. O’Callaghan commented,

It is frequently mentioned that Cork punches above its weight when it comes to the tech sector on an international field, however when looking at the tech originating from Cork supported with the endless talent emerging from institutions such as UCC and MTU, Cork is on par with the best cities worldwide.

Cork continues to play a strong role in areas such as Cyber, IoT, Data Analytics and Cloud. We are seeing emerging sectors such as FinTech, AgTech, BioTech and AI featuring across the tech landscape.

While 2020 to date has been a year of immense chaos, our members are confident about weathering the storm. With Tech behemoths such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. all now explicitly stating that remote working will make up a significant proportion of their employee base going forward, Cork is well poised to capitalise on this opportunity. We must remain focussed on the progress we were making on housing, our national broadband plan must continue in order to enable growth within rural communities and our education system must continue to focus on tech as a priority and maintain the high calibre we have produced year over year”.

Mr. O’Callaghan concluded,

This event is free for members and it is amazing value for non-members as well. For just €32.50, attendees get access to the entire 5 days of keynotes, panels and workshops”.
