The New Rules of Marketing & PR has sold more than 400,000 copies in 29 languages, and after reading it I certainly understand why.
I think this book will be a game-changer for many business executives, CMO’s and entrepreneurs, and here is why.
Every year, many businesses are still spending millions of marketing euros on traditional media such as tv and radio.
While there is a time and a place for this, there is now (in my opinion) a better, more targeted and measurable way to utilize a marketing budget.
A new way that is still being grossly underappreciated by many of those who are in control of a company’s marketing budget.
The new rules I refer to, are Social Media Marketing, Digital Marketing, Blogging, and direct to consumer online communications.
This book clearly demonstrates the power of these new mediums to anyone who is willing to listen and it demonstrates how such efforts are driving real-life business results.
The New Rules of Marketing & PR
Two statements in the book stood out for me:
1. ‘’The internet has made public relations public again, after years of almost exclusive focus on the media’’. What I believe this statement refers to is the fact that the power is now in your hands.
You are the media!
You can pick up your phone and communicate with thousands of people who may be interested in what your selling, and you don’t need to be connected to the right person in the mainstream media to do it, the opportunity is there for everyone!”
2. ‘’People want authenticity, not spin.’’ The way in which we communicate has changed dramatically. What worked on a tv commercial won’t necessarily work online.
You need to produce content that is native to the platform and don’t be afraid to be true to who you are”.
As technology continues to evolve and new social media and digital platforms emerge, there will always be a need to update this book. But the principles right now are on point.
If you are someone who still believes traditional media is the way to go, I strongly advise you to pick up The New Rules for Marketing and PR and implement the tactics.
Otherwise, you might just get left behind by someone who does. Such as your competition!
As someone who has built a business from scratch myself solely on the back of online marketing, I can standby the recommendations in this book.
I commend the author for laying out a roadmap of the new rules needed for success in the modern-day communication industry.
