Interesting possible solution to infection via COVID-19, using robots
Could robots do the dirty work to clean up contaminated spaces? Instead of spraying chemicals, researchers such as Andrea Armani, the Ray Irani Chair in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at USC, have demonstrated that UV-C light could be an important tool to kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces.
How Robots Could Help Fight COVID-19
Leveraging this knowledge, researchers at the USC Center for Advanced Manufacturing have created a demo showing how a robot could be employed remotely to apply UV-C light for cleaning hard- to-reach spaces to fight the Coronavirus. The key technical aspects of this demonstration are the mobility and agility of the robot. The robot can manipulate objects in the environment to expose occluded surfaces for treatment with UV light.
“Trained humans to perform disinfection are a scarce resource at this time crisis. We need disinfection methods to ensure that humans remain safe during the operation and the highest level of task completion quality can be ensured.” said SK Gupta, the director of the USC Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Smith International Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, whose group was responsible for ensuring the robot could work remotely and accurately.
