When and where is it on?

NodeConf EU returns to Kilkenny in the Lyrath Estate Hotel from Sunday 10th to Wednesday 13th of November 2019.

NodeConfEU returns to Kilkenny

How many years has it been going on?

NodeConfEU is now in its 8th year and originated as Node Dublin in 2012. Established by the Tramore-headquartered global software development company NearForm to provide a forum for the Node.js community, the conference was renamed NodeConf EU in 2013 and is now Europe’s longest-running and leading Node.js conference.  At the same time 8 years ago, NearForm set up Ireland’s first and only Node.js Developer Meetup in Dublin.

What was the inspiration to start it?

When NearForm was co-founded by Cian O’Maidin, he fell in love with the values of the Open Source community and the power of where the open source mindset and that way of working together could take you.  He believed the open source philosophy was the right way to go about building software – all ships rise when everybody contributes to something that is shared and relied upon. Around that time, Node.js went from being relatively unknown to being adopted by global brands such as Walmart & Paypal who saw the commercial benefits of using it in their transformation projects.

Node.js became very attractive to developers wanting to work in a new technology where they could express ideas really, really quickly and get them into production. NodeConfEU was established to provide a platform for these communities – visionaries, industry leaders and Node.js experts – to come together to collaborate and discuss the latest developments in Node in a positive learning environment.  NodeConfEU provides them with the opportunity to learn, ask questions, share knowledge, problem-solve, network and have fun!

What exciting things can people look forward to?

There is so much to look forward to at NodeConfEU from talks exploring new developments and what’s coming down the line to workshops providing practical advice.  An exciting mix of over 30 speakers from companies such as Google, IBM, Github, Elastic, Telus and ING Bank providing talks and workshops on topics from Kubernetes to microservices and diagnostics, from Javascript & IOT to Machine Learning and cloud architectures.

Beyond the talks and workshops, we’ve a great line up of activities and entertainment over the 4 days with plenty of opportunities for fun and networking with other like-minded individuals from across 26 countries.  A hacker’s lounge, a code and learn workshop and some drone activity from sponsor, Skycatch are some of the tech highlights. For those who want some down time, there will be bodhrán classes, live music, carnival games, some cultural highlights with a visit to Kilkenny City and a gala dinner.

As in 2017 and 2018, all  NodeConf EU 2019 attendees will receive a hackable digital badge. This year’s badge is a major departure and has some groundbreaking new features which will be announced at the opening! Everyone will be able to easily connect to their badge from a web-browser and access all its functionality via simple JavaScript code.  The digital badge has always been a huge talking point and only promises to be much bigger this year!

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

All attendees can take part in a fun workshop where they’ll learn how to hack their own NodeConf EU digital badge in some surprising ways. No experience necessary!

Limited edition t-shirts and stickers to mark Node.js turning 10 years old this year will be much-coveted items.

Who will be speaking?

There are over 30 speakers hand-picked based on their contribution and level of innovation within the Node.js community.

Keen open source advocates will be anticipating the stage arrival of Jan Lehnardt, organizer of JsConfEU and CEO of neighbourhood.ie.  Jan will be speaking on how serverless originated from CouchDB!  Using CouchDB, mustache.js, CouchApps, PouchDB, Node.js, Hoodie, The Cloud, Docker, Kubernetes, and Serverless, Jan will tell the story of how emergent trends accumulate in unexpected ways and how ideas progress from prototype to mass adoption.

We’re also delighted to welcome C J Silverio, ex-CTO of npm.  She will speak about Entropic, a new package manager for the JavaScript community and beyond.

Benedikt Meuer Technical Lead at Google will be sharing his stories from working on V8, the JavaScript engine that powers both Node.js and Chrome.

Shelley Vohr, software engineer at GitHub, will explain how Electron works beneath its surface veneer, as well as tools created within its dependencies that have enabled the Electron project to flourish as it has.

Liran Tal, developer advocate at Snyk and energetic member of the Node.js foundation Security WG, author of Essential Node.js Security and core contributor at OWASP NodeGoat, will be sharing his expertise on how to create a more secure ecosystem for Node.js and JavaScript.  He will outline how we can identify and defend against malicious packages on npm and how the open source model and the human factor play a role in all of this.

We’ll also be welcoming Matteo Collina, Technical Director at NearForm, on stage to share his views on the module ecosystem as a key ingredient in the success of the JavaScript ecosystem.  Matteo will also lead a workshop on Fastify, the framework that helps you build a modular, consistent and pluggable system for migrating a monolith to a microservices architecture.

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

The networking activities at NodeConf.eu are a key part of its success. Meet your fellow Node practitioners and discuss the interesting talks of the day.  Take the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas. NodeConf.eu shortens the gap between key community members and conference attendees, enabling the community to grow.

How can people book tickets/ when does it usually sell out?

People can book tickets at nodeconf.eu. Tickets typically sell out fast in the last few days of September and early October.
