Knitting, stamp collecting, and bird-watching are pastimes that you may associate with the elderly age group, but a nationwide study conducted in the UK has shown that these hobbies have been reinvigorated by the younger Gen Z.
The study posed the question to Brits aged between 16-29 to see if they had taken up any new hobbies of recent, finding that 60% of all who answered the survey had taken up a new hobby last year, with 58 out of that 60% claiming it has helped them feel more grounded.
33% of the Gen Z population who conducted the survey said they acquired gardening as a hobby, the most popular answer. This was followed by painting who accumulated 23% of the vote, and bread baking which came in at 22%. Towards the other end of the spectrum, there were some unusual answers which included collecting vinyl, up-cycling furniture, and jam-making.
Keith Lemon Also in on the Act
Star comedian and brand ambassador for Create and Craft, Keith Lemon mentioned how he has co-aligned with Gen Z by using the lockdown period to start making things.
Lemon: “I’ve made so many things during lockdown, my office is starting to look like Jim Henson’s workshop… Apparently it’s inspired other people to make stuff too, which is nice”.
“Don’t get me wrong I love having a day of doing nowt, but I like the feeling that I’ve done something productive and made something”.
55% of the Gen Z population who answered the survey said they have taken up a new hobby because they realized there is more to life than screens, and 44% have claimed they hope to upkeep their new hobbies even after the lockdown period ends.
With a lot of popular trends involving social media proving prevalent, many who have taken this survey have chose to get away from their screens and do something more practical, proving that in some cases, trends do go around in circles.
