If you don’t keep your eye on tech trends, you could lose track of the rapid progress we’re making across different industries. Although you’ve probably heard of many of these trends already in some capacity, it’s good to stay updated about what to expect come 2020. Even though you’ve heard the terms before, there’s still a lot to learn about how each of these tech trends could affect your life or your business in the coming years.
We’re keeping our eyes on these 5 tech trends in particular.
Top 5 Trending Technologies to watch for 2020
#1 Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI is just waiting for 5G tech to catch up. Once the fifth generation of wireless spreads around more cities, AI tech can be put into use in every day life applications. Many AI-powered systems require huge amounts of data to operate, making it near impossible to get by on 4G. 5G is the key to AI. Since it’s gaining steam and getting installed in more locations, we can expect to see AI following close behind.
Tech powered by AI includes everything from self-driving cars to some IoT devices. It has the potential to fundamentally change the way we interact with the world. Although it’s likely to pop up slowly, by the time AI is all around it will make for some drastic changes to many services we use and love today, as well as introducing new tech services into the game.
#2 Blockchain Everything
Blockchain sounds like a new industry buzzword, but it’s actually a useful concept that can benefit many different industries. Using blockchain tech, companies can improve their security, speed up online processes, increase order speed and capacity, and get more accomplished overall.
It’s not likely that we’ll see blockchain everywhere. In fact, you may not even see it in action. However, it’s likely that more companies will start operating with a blockchain-type system that woks in the background to improve customer experience. A better customer experience reaps benefits for everyone involved.
#3 AR + VR
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have been talked about for years. These are concepts that popped up decades ago in films and fantasy, but we’ve never really had the tech infrastructure to make it happen until recently. With several large gaming studios announcing VR or AR games coming up, as well as notable VR centers appearing that allow people to go and play a VR simulation for a fee, these two pieces of related tech are set to hit the mainstream soon.
In 2020, you can expect to see more announcements about AR and VR tech appearing in the gaming industry, but it’s also likely to pop up where you wouldn’t expect it. Apps are increasingly using AR to supplement their normal services. Mobile apps like Pokemon Go, Snapchat, BBC Civilizations, Sketch AR, and others offer an augmented reality experience completely for free.
AR shows up in so many forms, from educational content to games or productivity apps. VR has similar uses, but since it’s a fully immersive experience it’s not as prevalent just yet. Headsets and other VR equipment are becoming more common, and you can expect to see more of them in 2020 as developers strive to introduce more VR content in the future. There is likely to be a renewed push for VR headsets and equipment to be purchased or used.
#4 Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
Automation is nothing new, but this type of automation specifically is growing in use. Rather than replacing people with robots, RPA is more concerned with taking repetitive tasks from human workers and giving them to a machine instead. Because there’s no real changes needed in the infrastructure of a company, it’s a cheaper and easier alternative for businesses that just need automation for a few existing processes.
For example, RPA has shown itself to be useful in complex company functions that interact with different departments, programs, applications, etc. A case study with Honda showed how RPA can simplify and automate even complex processes that touch multiple different systems within the organization.
It’s not just large, sluggish companies that can benefit from RPA. Even small and medium-sized businesses can benefit by using RPA to automate processes that are normally done manually, helping the businesses to scale up more easily. By automating daily operations systems, you can free up employees to do work that’s more touch-sensitive, such as interacting with customers. This makes your business more flexible and competitive.
#5 Edge Computing
We’ve all head of cloud computing. Edge computing is the next step in putting everything on the cloud. Cloud solutions can create latency and generate high costs for data transfers, because of the centralized nature of cloud computing. Data could be sent far away for centralized data servers, regardless of where your company is located or what you’re doing with the data.
In contrast to this, edge computing keeps data stored my closer to the location where it’s being generated and used. This helps reduce latency and lowers data transfer costs for businesses using the data. Edge computing is helpful when you need real-time access to data for processing.
A real-life example of this is companies using IoT devices. All the data generated by IoT devices can be processed locally and stored in an edge computing facility, being sent or accessed from another service only as needed. This reduces the amount of transfers happening over a network, reducing the bandwidth use and improve overall latency.
We know technology is ever-changing. Every year there’s something new to look for on the horizon. 2020 is set to be a very interesting year for technological advancements, especially with the expected increase in 5G infrastructure and accessibility. These 5 areas in particular should provide enough change to tech-watchers busy!
