Emerging Cyber Threats To Watch In 2019

We live in very different times. How we live our lives would seem almost impossible a couple of decades back. Technology has taken such a massive step that in one generation, the gap in innovation seems so wide. We face very different threats to what our parents and grandparents were worried about during their time.

Many such threats come from different areas of the world brought to our doorstep because of the internet. But we have one thing going for us. We have the capacity to fight back and defend ourselves if we stay vigilant. Below are some of the emerging threats for 2019 to look out for.

  • Cryptojacking

If you pay attention to news media or to social media, you will know that the world has been swept up the cryptocurrency craze. Left and right people are claiming to have amassed millions of dollars worth in crypto coins through mining.

This enormous amount of transaction did not go unnoticed by people and have started exploiting people’s lack of knowledge about data protection and siphoning crypto coins into their accounts. Computers are still inherently governed by codes, and there will always be someone out there who can outwit the current security protocol.

  • Internet of things threats

We are seeing a rise in devices that are even more connected to the internet. From wearables to cameras, to bulbs, tracking device, and appliances, we see even more control of devices that we previously have little control thanks to the internet.

But this advancement also has its drawback. Being connected to the internet could put these devices vulnerable to attacks. Some attacks might be harmless: bulbs suddenly turning on or thermostat resetting, but some can be harmful like hacking home security systems to spy on residents.

  • Geopolitical dangers

For many years, we are seeing a lot of cyber attacks coming from countries many would consider a threat to national security. These countries are usually unstable and could stand to benefit from the destabilization of other countries. What’s worrisome about this threat is that the culprit usually has vast resources that can very well take on even the most secure data banks of the world.

  • Malware in mobile

We are accustomed to viruses that infect our PC a couple of years back. But now we see a new trend in online bug infestation. Many are now targeting mobile phones due to its popularity. Once infected, a mobile virus could transmit personal data and information from mobile users to its creator and use it to gain bank accounts and credit cards.

  • Artificial intelligence

What was once fiction, is now a fact. As it stands, AI is a more significant threat when it comes to many jobs. Many companies are eager to increase productivity and efficiency, and unfortunately, many programs can offer that, outcompeting human labor.

We can either wait it out and see if regulations are created to even out the playing field or be proactive and diversify human skills to something even AI can’t take over.
