With the number of cyber-incidents on the rise, the need to be on top of IT security is more important than ever. In this article, we look at the new innovations and emerging technologies trends that are helping organisations strengthen their security practices.

Trend #1: GDPR Goes Global

As we enter 2020, it’s clear that the importance of data protection and personal privacy rights is set to grow. In 2019, the General Data Protection Regulation (more commonly known as GDPR) celebrated its first birthday. Since the launch of this revolutionary new data protection regulation in Europe, other countries (such as Australia, Brazil and Canada) have since rolled out their own data protection laws.

Trend #2: AI & ML Based Security Systems

2019 saw the development of cybersecurity solutions that make use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These solutions leverage these to dynamically identify threats in real-time so that organisations can act proactively rather than reactively to threats. What’s more, the use of AI means that these solutions could gather and analyse data to facilitate decision-making.

Trend #3: Cloud Security to Remain A Top Priority

As more and more organisations migrate their workloads, applications and data to the cloud, cloud security will continue to grow in importance. For many organisations, data loss, leakage, privacy, and confidentiality are the main concerns. While cloud service providers continue to grow security services to protect their various cloud platforms, it is ultimately up to the clients themselves to secure any applications and data that are stored within these cloud environments.

Trend #4: IoT Security

Gartner estimate that the number of Internet of Things devices will surpass 20.4 billion by 2020. Cybersecurity experts posit that increased adoption of IoT will make enterprises and consumers more vulnerable to bad actors online. 2019 is likely to see major development of solutions which aim to resolve common IoT security challenges.

Trend #5: Next-Gen Authentication Technology

Did you know that More than 85% of cyberattacks are a result of people getting tricked out of their passwords? In 2019, we will likely see a move away from passwords as more and more organisations gravitate towards next-generation authentication technologies such as biometrics and multi-factor authentication.
