Four girls from Coláiste Nano Nagle, a DEIS post-primary school in Limerick, are finalists for the BT Young Pioneer Award 2018. Their social enterprise, Tasca, came about from participating in a Technovation Challenge afterschool programme run by Teen-Turn.
Teens Sophie Boyce, Tara Daly, Amy O’Halloran and Caitriona O’Halloran created the app, Mindmoodz, after identifying that there was a mental health epidemic in their city, one that impacted their peers. They decided to offer “that light at the end of the tunnel for those who have no motivation and need some hope” by developing an easy-to-navigate app that allows users to track their moods not only to understand triggers but also to help highlight the positive things in their life.
Information about Mindmoodz and a short video presentation can be found here: https://www.tech4goodawards.com/finalist/mindmoodz/
The girls will travel to the BT Centre in London on Tuesday, July 17th to attend the AbilityNet Tech4Good Awards Ceremony.
In addition to being finalists for the prestigious BT Young Pioneer Award, the girls are also nominees for the Tech4Good People’s Award, which is voted for by the general public. Supporters can cast a vote via social media using the hashtag #T4GMindMoodz on Twitter or Instagram or by going to the website www.tech4goodawards.com/vote-now/
Teen-Turn addresses—in addition to gender equality in the workplace—economic inclusion for girls from areas where higher education is uncommon by providing hands-on practical experience and mentorship in technology through after school activities and summer work placements.
