10 Rules To Follow To Simplify Your Entrepreneurial Journey (#7 Is Surprising, But True!)
What does an entrepreneur do? What is a day in the life of an entrepreneur like? Busy? Overwhelming? Exciting? How does one become an entrepreneur? Can anyone be an entrepreneur? Will I be a good entrepreneur?
There are a lot of questions in the mind of an aspiring or about-to-be entrepreneur, and that’s okay. It has never been easier to start a business or businesses?—or taking on risks to do so.
If you are thinking about becoming an entrepreneur, chances are, you are trying to get your head around “what it truly takes”. While there is no definite guide of success for entrepreneurs, there are examples of well-known entrepreneurs—people who have been there, done that, and got successful—that we all can learn from.
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Pierre Omidyar, Arianna Huffington, Caterina Fake—the list goes on and on, and so are the lessons we can learn.
What comes ahead is not the list of 100 richest entrepreneurs with wildly successful ventures, but a few basic rules that if you follow you can simplify your entrepreneurial journey. Keeping that in mind, here are ten simple rules to follow for anyone who wants to be a successful entrepreneur.
- Do what you like doing
Almost every successful entrepreneurial journey originates from passion. An individual can only succeed as an entrepreneur if s/he is truly passionate about the business idea. Earning profits and generating higher revenue is important, but your passion and vision is what will force you to success. Just remember, you can’t be successful at something you don’t even like to do.
- Have go-get-’em kind of attitude
When you’re an entrepreneur, people expect you to reflect a specific kind of attitude—the gritty kind. As an entrepreneur, you should have the ability to keep the action going even when everyone tells you that it’s not going to work. Honestly, it’s not easy to give up as an entrepreneur. You have to work hard, smart and act with perseverance. Else, you’re not going to make it.
- Hire people like you (or better than you)
Successful entrepreneurs don’t just get successful within a vacuum. If you want to simplify your entrepreneurial journey, you have got to have a great team and support network besides you. We suggest that you hire people who are the same as you (or better). Make sure that they have the same grit as yours and are willing to respect your vision. Don’t even think about going solo—the chances of you making it on your own are steep.
- Build your community—also, communicate with it
One of the most fascinating things about being in the business world is “customer”. But instead of just selling products and providing services for the sake of doing business, focus on building a community that loved to talk and communicate about your business. Once you’ve successfully built a community, take the opportunity to learn from them (what they like, what they don’t like, what do they need the most, and what you need to improve). Knowing all these details will help you satisfy your targeted community better and make your business a successful business—making you a successful entrepreneur.
- Use technology to improve
Entrepreneurship and technology make a great pair. No matter the size or complexity of your new venture, putting technology to effective use always brings both tangible and intangible perks—improve forecast accuracy, increasing quality, and effectiveness, limiting costs, reduce risks, boosting efficiency, improving communication, and so on. There are tools—like ProofHub (project management software, Slack (team messaging app), MyHours (time tracking software), HubSpot (marketing software), and FreshBooks (accounting software), to name a few—that are shaping the lives of the entrepreneurs and also the way they work. Learn to embrace and you will be okay.
- Recognize the risks that you should take
It’s true. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks. But that does not mean that you will make every weird, risky choice that comes your way. Confused? Well, here’s the thing: all successful entrepreneurs are great risk-takers, but not all risk-takers are successful entrepreneurs. That means you need to be smart about your choices. Always plan before taking risks and make sure that your choices are not putting you or your company in a harmful way.
- Accept failure (because you will fail)
Yes, you heard that right. We said that. Failure is a universal truth. We all fail at some point—entrepreneurs or not. It’s better to accept failure now than later. Think of it this way: It doesn’t matter how many times you fail, what matters is how much did you learn when you failed. Making mistakes is an aspect of growing. But you need to make sure that you’re constantly trying and learning to improve yourself based on your mistakes.
- Find ways to differentiate yourself
Business competition has gotten fierce. That means if there is a new business idea swirling around in your head, chances are, there are 10 other people with the same idea or something similar. Being an entrepreneur, you should have the ability to highlight your business’s sweet spots (strengths), differentiate it from others, and maintain sustainable growth.
- Self-promote (but not in a cheeky way)
One of the biggest reasons why 20% of new entrepreneurs fail in their first year is because they fail to self-promote or talk too much about their business. Frankly, it doesn’t take much effort to promote yourself and your business factually and quickly. All you need to do is talk fair and square about your business. In simple words, when someone asks you about your business, tell them the bad as well as the good. Also, never talk without numbers. No one wants to hear you bragging about yourself—they want stats and polished figures of how your business is doing.
- Celebrate and enjoy your journey
Your entrepreneurial journey is not a straight line. It’s like a heartbeat—full of ups and downs. Now, you need to keep the energy and motivation levels high throughout the journey. For which, you need to celebrate every achievement, no matter how small it is. Celebrate, recognize, and reward the people around you for what they have accomplished and keep reminding them where you want them to be in the future.
Conclusion
People don’t succeed at entrepreneurship overnight. It takes time. As we’ve demonstrated in these 10 rules, you have to take a lot of time and a lot of measurable steps until your entrepreneurial journey becomes a success.
You can do it as long as you have a long-term strategy for potential pitfalls. Also, remember that your journey doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit. You surely have (or soon will) people in your team that you can trust to give or take help. As they say—“it takes a village to build an empire.”
Becoming a successful entrepreneur is no easy task. Hopefully, by following these simple rules, it will become just a little bit easier and help you push your dream harder toward its success.
