As all software engineers will know, it is near to impossible to code something that is 100% perfect, especially once you have updated various parts of the program. You can never be sure if everything will run smoothly until you hit the update option and run the updated code to see if it does what it is supposed to. Testing is an integral part of building, improving, and evolving almost all products these days.

In 2011 Marc Andreessen, globally renowned tech entrepreneur, investor and innovator, declared “Software Is Eating The World” and by 2016 he updated his analysis to declare “Software Is Programming The World”. In this context, it is vitally important that your own company has a comprehensive testing strategy and that you aim to automate as much of it as possible to get the best results possible. Great test engineers pick up many faults and software always has bugs somewhere in the code, however, if you can implement test automating software then you will achieve higher levels of effective successfully working code. Automated software testing is now an essential part of all successful development projects. Historically automated software testing was seen as being too expensive for smaller companies, but as more and more software testing tools are being developed price has fallen and become less of a barrier for small companies.

In Ireland, Quality Assurance Automation testing is in increasing demand, and more and more companies are looking to fill positions in this area. One of the challenges, however, is that there are not enough people to fill these positions. Laura Boland, Software Placements QA recruiter explains more.

“We have some great candidates here in Ireland, but not enough for all the roles we are trying to fill. A number of foreign companies opening their IT HQ’s here in Ireland far outweigh the amount of available IT workers.”

Laura has been working in this area for a number of years and explains that we will be seeing more and more demand for people who have experience working in this area.

“Things are changing. Testing is now 80% automation based. Companies that I would have recruited QA Automation candidates for in the past have now set up their automation framework and have let go of the majority of their manual staff. There still is a minor need for manual testers in companies but my advice is to get your coding/automation experience as soon as you can.”
