In my “day job” I spend a lot of time in public with my iPhone on silent in my pocket and unable to check incoming calls or texts until theres a break! What if its an emergency? Or even worse still, what if I need to put the bin out when I get home 😉

A great way to get around this is to assign a custom vibration pattern to contacts that you just have to know are trying to contact you!

Open Contacts; select a contact, then tap the Edit button in the top right corner. Scroll down to find the ringtone field; below it is a vibration field. Tap that, and you’ll see an assortment of built-in vibration patterns you can choose from. Further down, though, is the ability to add a custom pattern: Tap Create New Vibration, and you can just tap on the screen to create your own rhythm. image 0

When you’re satisfied (tap the Play button to see what it will feel like), tap Save to set the pattern.

If that’s not enough, go back to the contact and you can also assign a custom vibration pattern for text messages by using the same method as above.

Also a rather cool way to let a caller know that you are not just ignoring their call is to set up Auto-Replies for calls you are unable to answer. On an incoming call just swipe upward on the phone icon that appears next to the unlock slider, this will present you with this screen-

This allows you to chose an appropriate text response, from preset messages or by adding your own text. To customise these preset options go to Settings – Phone – Reply with Message. Next tap on whichever message you want to edit and enter your own message! image 2
