When is it on?

May 11-13, 2017

How many years has it been going?

This is the first year

What was the inspiration to start it?

The idea for Upstream grew out of conversations Paul Allen has been having with others in the music and entertainment industries for years. As you know, he’s passionate about Seattle and the local music scene, so is committed to seeing Upstream succeed as an event that supports local artists and can find new solutions for the music industry. Paul has a long history of supporting music and the arts, as well as Seattle. A few examples:
· MoPOP: Founded by Paul in 2000, the nonprofit museum is dedicated to popular culture. It offers a multitude of community and educational programs related to music.
· Seattle Art Fair: Founded by Paul to be an innovative art experience in Seattle accessible to everyone in the community through the fair itself and a robust program of projects that utilize the fair’s public spaces and adjacent neighborhoods.
· Hospital Club: A creative hub in the heart of London offering the creative community the environment & facilities it needs to Create, Connect, & Collaborate founded by Paul in 2004. It is set to expand to LA in 2018.

What exciting things can people look forward to for the 2017 version?

Upstream Music Fest + Summit will celebrate the emerging sound of the northwest. This region has been redefining the music industry for decades, and our success stories span genres and generations. The three-day fest and summit will celebrate the sound of the region and provide the industry with an experience that fosters and supports Northwest artists at every level of their career. At the music fest, we’ll be featuring emerging talent from the region in wide ranging performances—from intimate shows in unique venues throughout Pioneer Square to surprise collaborations at the Main Stage. At the Upstream Summit, emerging artists, industry experts and creative collaborators from the Northwest and beyond will gather at WaMu Theater to dive into how to succeed in the changing music economy, both in support of our regional music industry and the industry at large. Our Seattle-based summit will dig into the most pressing opportunities and challenges currently facing the music industry, especially emerging artists here in the region and features keynotes from Quincy Jones, Macklemore, Portia Sabin and Ron Jones.

We just announce our full lineup— a diverse group of 300+ emerging artists from the region who will perform at Upstream May 11-13. The Northwest is not defined by one genre or style and our full lineup of 300+ artists playing across 25+ stages celebrates the sound of our region. These artists have been curated by our region’s most trusted music influencers—our lead curator Meli Darby and team of Guest Curators (Sub Pop Records, Marco Collins, KEXP, Showbox Presents and Barsuk Records to name a few). Our main stage, which consists of artists who exemplify the Upstream mission with their local and global appeal, their shared passion for delivering creative live performances and their support of emerging artists. On the main stage, you can catch Flying Lotus, AlunaGeorge, Beat Connection and Deep Sea Diver on Friday night and Shabazz Palaces, Dinosaur Jr., Jay Park and Snarky Puppy on Saturday night.
